Water lily or lotus?

It seems that not ever flower that grows on water is a water lily flower. And it seems, furthermore, that there is a botanical difference between a lotus flower and a water lily flower. In Fact Sheet: Water Lilies and Lotuses, the difference in appearance is explained:
The leaves of the water lily sits on the water, but the lotus rises and its leaves sit up to four feet above the water.

Not that I can tell the difference just by looking — from a distance — at a flower rising above the water. So I’ll leave it to you to decide whether that’s a water lily flower or a lotus flower.
The photo above was taken at the Japanese Garden near Lake Caliraya. Whether they are lotus flowers or water lily flowers, I think they’re lovely.

I think it is a water lily because the leaves were on the water. The lotus leaves’ normally are above the water.
You mean, the curled ones are connected to the flower and the flat ones are not? Tama ba yun?
After seeing this photo I googled C.Monet to refresh my mind on the series of water lilies
painting I so admire.The LACMA is fortunate to have one of those paintings in it’s collection.
One was auctioned and sold for $7 mil a few years ago In London.
Beautiful shot….the flower,the reflection on the water,colors,etc.
I have another shot which is more Monetish. More lights and reflections. Of course, it won’t sell for $7 million hehehe…
