The most annoying TV food host is Rachael Ray

By Connie Veneracion on August 2, 2007

We’re a Dream Satellite subscriber (nothing else available in our area) and Dream does not have the Lifestyle network nor Food TV channel. What food shows we see are the ones on Travel & Living Channel. That means we get Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson, Anthony Bourdain, Floyd-whats-his-name, David Rocco, the Surreal Gourmet, Surfing the Menu… I can’t complain except that I hate Dine with Me and that’s probably because it follows a reality show format. Among the non-food shows, I dislike Miami Ink and David Tutera most but that’s another story.

But when typhoon Milenyo hit the Philippines last year and our waterless situation forced us to flee to a hotel, I had my fill of the Lifestyle network. Those were weekdays so the kids were in school and Speedy was at work. There was just me in the hotel room, blogging and watching the Lifestyle channel. I just loved The Barefoot Contessa. Unfortunately, there was Rachael Ray too.

I’ve seen Rachael Ray in Oprah’s show but never really paid attention. Not until I had my fill of the Lifestyle network did I wonder why the heck she was such a best-selling cookbook author and a hit on TV. I didn’t like her voice, her mannerisms, her expressions, I didn’t like her clothes and, most of all, I didn’t like her cooking. In fact, I couldn’t call what she was doing as cooking. I thought, oh my gosh, what a slob. You know, I used to have Amazon ads on my food blog. I took them down after a few weeks because Rachael Ray was always on top of the 160×600 vertical banner.

Popular as she was, I thought that I must be alone in my dislike for her. She’s already some kind of icon, for goodness’ sakes. At the very least, America must love her. Then, a San Francisco food blogger started a poll on her blog on Which Food Celebrity is the Most Annoying. I voted and was amazed at the results. Currently at the top of the list is Rachael Ray (it’s on the sidebar).

Along with the poll is an entry to allow the blog readers to explain their choices. One comment stood out. It said, in part: “Mediocrity for a house hold that doesn’t make much money or has very little time outside of work has an appeal. And that is [what] Rachel is selling. A fast easy dish that will at least have SOME nutritional value. It’s not something I personally would consider a good idea unless I was strapped for time and money, but I know families who are strapped for both and I have to applaud that one thing for Rachel. If people are eating her recipes in 30 minutes, then they aren’t eating canned sloppy joes or McDonald’s and that’s a plus.”

To be quite honest, I never appreciated Rachael Ray in that way. The commenter raises a good point but I still don’t like Rachael Ray and her brand of cooking. But that commenter’s perspective makes her less useless in my opinion.

    Hi Connie,

We have Lifetyle network in our Cable channel. Like you, I also do not like Rachel Ray, but I am a big fan of Barefoot Contessa.

KUdos to your healthyk, delicious cooking….

Hi Jo, if I can only cook without getting sweaty and messing my hair like the Barefoot Contessa… hehehehe

    Hi connie,

Tama ka dyan, when you observ her, as if cooking is just like boiling a pot of water, no sweat.

It’s her gritty voice and those stupid acronyms (EVOO, etc). Ah well, she’s much better than another of the american’s, Sandra Lee I think. Thank goodness we don’t get her. Rachel is way better than her.

    I adore Nigella.

Jo, but then again, it’s so much colder in the Hamptons hehehe

    Mila, re “I adore Nigella.”

Oh, so do I. And she cooks REAL FOOD. None of those “impress the guests” kind of cooking. No short cuts either.

love the barefoot contessa. she seem nice, loving and generous. the hamptons sans snooty-ness. i only saw nigell bites a couple of times- and both times, it took me home to some rainy days in manila.
rachel ray is ok- i tried a couple of her recipes- it’s not that great, but then again, she gets people excited and thinking- “hmmm…i can do that…” i like michael chiarelllo aswell…
all these makes me so hungry. so, what’s for dinner, ms. connie?
    :)

LOL Inna  Ummm… something beefy.

miss sassy, if you think she is annoying on her cooking show, wait till you see her on her talk show…

Nah, she’s not THAT popular here in the US. I can’t stand her. The only show of hers I used to watch was the “$40 a day” show where she traveled the US and would show how you could spend just $40/day on food while on vacation. Other than that, she’s soooo over-exposed on tv now that people are getting annoyed with her.

Anthony Bourdain always makes fun of her. He sometimes makes reference to her in his show.

Karen, she has a TALK show??? omg… Maybe we’re lucky, after all, not having all those channels…

Nikita, Anthony Bourdain guest-wrote in someone’s blog not too long ago… I was laughing out loud at his assessment of RR and her cooking.

there’s the 30-minute meals, and then there’s rachael ray the talk show. i dont watch the latter, but i admit im glued to the former.

never tried any of her recipes, i know i cant accomplish 4 dishes in 30 minutes (well, that’s me, hahaha!), many of her ingredients i think i’ll have difficulty gathering, etc etc. but i admit i am inspired by her. gusto ko yung dating. very light. very homey. cozy. parang ang sarap magluto at magchop ng gulay (lalo na kung ganon kaganda ang kusina diba? :D )

ang di ko gusto ko yung RR the talk show. sumobra na sa tweetums.

the cooking show pala is being aired on a local channel but not the talk show. i’m curious now about the talk show.

Ms. Connie, the talkshow is on the lifestyle channel, i don’t really watch it but it airs between 8-9, weekdays, i think

Ah… eh wala kami lifestyle channel… okay na rin yun hehehehe

I have her cook book. Ang daming ka ekekan sa ingredients. I have not tried one of her recipe.

But you know what, I had two copies, and gave one to a then 10 year old friend. She cooked one of the dishes from the cook book!

I like Barefoot Contessa, she reminds me of my mom. Gentle and calm. She also has very good recipes. I also watch Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservation.

Rachel Ray is such a big hit around here because of the quick cooking recipes. People seem to only have 30 minutes for cooking. I’ve tried some of her recipes and they are for weekday cooking. She irritates me because she talks so fast and too hyper that it feels stressful to watch her. She has a morning talk show, which is an over-kill. New Yorker’s tend to be fast on everything(talk, drive, cook, etc.)

I agree with KK -on RR being very HYPER in her show–grabe! One time, guest nya si Neil Patrick Harris (aka Doogie Howser,MD–my fave show circa 19kopong-kopong) and sinabihan nya si RR na “please don’t shout at me” kasi nga magkatabi sila nagluluto eh panay ang sigaw ni RR. For a couple of minutes, natameme si RR (KODAK moment!). But she just said (in a lowered voice) na nahahyper lang talaga sya pag nagluluto. I don’t watch her–I was just flicking through the channels & I really enjoyed hearing NPH tell RR NOT TO SHOUT. I’d rather watch Martha Stewart –calmer and quieter….

and oh BTW, I am a NEW YORKER!

lette, kapanahon ni doogie howser… remember mork & mindy? how hyper robin williams was in the show? just recently, there was a TV movie on that period of robin william’s life — he was a drug addict during the time. of course, am not insinuating anything about RR… naisip ko lang…

I don’t like her either. I hate it when she says EVOO instead of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. And she’s just too chatty for my own comfort. She was kinda ok when she was on 30 Minute Meals. Some of her dishes were edible and doable but not great by any gustatory standard.

Ahh, Ina Garten! My idol. Who wouldn’t want a beautiful house in East Hamptons and drive a BMW convertible to go to the neighborhood deli to buy olives and prosciutto. And her kitchen!! I heard she had some sort of falling out with Martha S. on some botched business deal. I don’t know if this is true but my sister and I were just “making tsismis” about it sometime ago.

Forgot…Floyd-whats-his-name, I like him too. He always seems drunk, though. And I love the way he says “kaffir lime leaves”. It’s so Brit. But that’s exactly what makes him so funny. I hope we’re talking about the same Floyd.

Kongkong, re Ina Garten… And her garden!!! I guess the attraction is that she personifies a laid-back life. You know, where cooking is something to be savored rather than to be rushed.

And, yeah, that’s THE Floyd hehehe. He’s a slob too sometimes but I learned how to cook so many Mediterranean dishes from him so I know his recipes work. :)

Ray Ray is annoyingly perky and sometimes when I’m watching her I just want to reach out my monitor and tell her to hush up..LOL. BUT I I give her credit she desrves for her success though. She used to be just dishing up those meals trying to sell products from a grocery store in Upstate NY, where my husband’s grandmother lives actually. Now she has built an empire for herself. There isn’t anything she isn’t doing that is making gold. Sorta like Oprah prodigy almost. As a woman, Rachel Ray doing it big in the Man’s World, hey, I appreciate that and give her my applause.

I love Ina Garten. I still have to attempt to make her devilish brownies. Sandra Lee on the other hand scares me. Too matchy matchy..LOL

I use to watch her show almost everyday, but i can’t stand her taling! Oh boy she’s a talker, she just won’t stop yapping, and that annoys me the most! Well, she’s a very bubbly person you know, but i think in her 30 minutes meal show, she does more talking than the actual cooking! And i agree with you on how she dress in her show, i mean, its obvious that she didnt have a lot of the “upper tingie”, i don’t understand why she keeps on wearing tight tops, so when you’re looking at her that’s the first thing you noticed!

I love Barefoot Contessa,i love her show, the way she cooks the meal, the way she set up the table and most of all i love her house with the vegetable garden, and how its really close to the beach and all!

Yes, Floyd’s the perpetual lush isn’t he? But he can cook even in the most basic of kitchens! And you can see that he loves Asian food (or maybe it’s more than the food! hehehe).

Does anyone remember the Frugal Gourmet? PBS show. Used to be really popular then some controversy struck and he lost his show.

Why oh why can’t our local cooking shows have a tenth of the writing strength and art direction that the overseas shows commit?

Mila: “Why oh why can’t our local cooking shows have a tenth of the writing strength and art direction that the overseas shows commit?”

Local cooking shows revolve around advertisers. The recipes are tailor made to include advertisers’ products. Advertisers’ taglines are even delivered by the show host. Disgusting.

pag nakakairita kasi and boses, hindi na magandang panoorin sa TV!

Dream subscriber din ako at mahilig manood ng travel and living channel. he he he.

i love Floyd, Anthony Bourdain, Nigella at saka yung Take Home Chef na aussie.

sikat siguro si rachel ray kasi para siyang “endorsed” ni oprah.

Yung Take Home Chef is one of the two-man team in Surfing the Menu. He’s a great cook.

Magpi picket ako sa tv station na magpapalabas ng show dito ni Rachael! the first time I saw her was in Oprah’s show and I thought…that’ll be the last! I also don’t like her for reasons you said.

mas gusto ko pa nagtitinda ng banana que sa kanto namin dati. Mas may poise pa :)

thess!!! akala ko huminto ka na mag-blog?? nagulat ako ah. LOL very, very pleasant surprise. :)

uy! kilala mo ako? silent fan mo ako kaso never mag iwan ng comment before..napalabas mo ako dahil kay rachael *Lol*

ilang buwan lang tinamad, balik blog ulit and more ;)..sikat kasi sa forum namin ang foodblog mo kaya sabi ko, magiiwan na ako ng comment… lurker no more *lol*

pag may time ka dalaw ka naman sa akin, bigyan mo ako ng input mo sa pinaglululuto ko he he.

    “kilala mo ako?”

of course! back when i had a blogroll on my food blog, you were there. :)

I agree she indeed has this annoying way of speaking to her audience. I have LSS (for lack of a better term) on her commercial with her shrieking “Thank you thank you! But please! Please! Sit down!”…. :)

My ultimate idol is the Barefoot Contessa. But I do love watching Molto Mario as I love Italian dishes.

I like Rachel Ray, she’s a lot better than that shallow gay Anthony Bourdain, her story is inspirational, I guess you guys don’t get the E! network in the philippines, but if you watch her life story and you can tell she’s a real down to earth person, and not a stuck up diva like Tyra Banks or Oprah. Also, Rachel Ray is genuinely educated, she was a newscaster, college educated, before she got her cooking show, unlike Tyra Banks whose education is “model”

Also, you have to admire that she wasn’t born rich, in fact she was very poor, and the fact that she worked hard genuinely to get to where she is is very admirable, unlike Paris Hilton who was given a fortune on the day she was born, and became a celebrity for being a party slut, Rachel Ray is a great person and shows what you can achieve if you only work hard for it.

Rachel Ray is quite hyper for my liking. I prefer Martha Stewart’s calm approach to cooking. Among the TV chefs/cooks in Pinas naman, I like Heny Sison.

maswerte na kung may time kang mag luto for 1/2 an hour dito sa US, the truth is most Americans eat outside. Just here in my neighborhood, I will never be hungry, there is a 24 hour diner. The only place I don’t get my food is Starbucks unless someone gives me a gift card and I’ll buy a package of salad from them, in the morning they have Starbucks coffee and danish, lunch is either Subway, McDs, Quiznos, or the cafeteria within the building, dinner can be ordered ahead of time to take home if you are taking Bart train home, if you are late by 1 minute, you have to wait another 20-30 minutes for the next train. So you’ll notice a lot of us is carrying the following, our purse, a gym bag, a tote bag and an insulated lunch bag. I myself don’t cook as I have to be at work before 8am, run to the hospital at the strike of 5:00pm, be at the bus stop at 9:00pm, pass by Walgreens for milk and juice, home by 10:00pm. One of my co-workers visited his relatives in Hawaii and was very envious of the his cousins family’s daily routine as they do sit down and have breakfast together compared to here in SF, that they had to have breakfast in their car.As for Rachel Ray, her Mom is of Sicilian descent and her father is James Ray, is Welsh, Scottish, and French. Italians are very expressive, animated and loud, add to that her father’s genes and you’ve got a one of a kind Rachael = compared to Joy Behar (The View) who is pure Italian

Lorena, that kind of lifestyle leads to obesity and malnutrition at the same time.

yes, kaya nga maraming obese dito sa US, when I came home, my cousin asked me kung talaga daw bang ganoong kalaki ang mga tao dito sa US, size XXXXXL, sabi ko oo and I asked him why he has this curiosity, sagot niya “kasi Ate, lugi ako pag size 40 na yong pantalon na kinakas kas ko ng liha” they are being paid Peso4.00 for each pant na kinaskas na para magmukhang luma, ito yong mga binenbenta sa Old Navy, Gap, at Banana Republic, talagang sweatshop pa rin talaga sa Pilipinas, ang may-ari ng pabrika sa Cavite ay Intsik.

    U.S. Obesity Trends 1985–2006
During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. This slide set illustrates this trend by mapping the increased prevalence of obesity across each of the states.

In 2006, only four states had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Twenty-two states had a prevalence equal or greater than 25%; two of these states (Mississippi and West Virginia) had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%.

Percent of Obese (BMI > 30) in U.S. Adults
    2006

The data shown in these maps were collected through the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Each year, state health departments use standard procedures to collect data through a series of monthly telephone interviews with U.S. adults. Prevalence estimates generated for the maps may vary slightly from those generated for the states by the BRFSS as slightly different analytic methods are used.

before my Mother got sick we always eat home cooked food. She never wants to go out dinner with me whenever I invited her, yesterday, as soon as I in the hospital, she made promise that she will go out dining with me to taste all the different food available here, Japanese, Malaysina, Singaporean, Indian, we even tried Turkish and their dessert is very good with accompanying tea sweetened by a rock sugar. As for me, I don’t really buy from McDo, its either we go to our neighbor Ethiopian/Eritrean cafeteria, get some mango salad, or the Japanese restaurant. The hospital cafeteria good is also very tasty and mostly vegetarian. I cut off my rice so wala ng business yong suki kong tindahan ng intsik, she did noticed that I don’t buy rice anymore.
