The days of the week, according to Speedy

by Connie Veneracion on May 26, 2008

If you’re a Wordpress user, you might have noticed that Monday is the first day of the week by default. I’ve often wondered about that because in grade school teachers were always very specific that the week starts with Sunday. The calendar says the same thing too.

For Speedy, however, Monday is the first day of the week. He and Alex were having an argument last night about it. Speedy took the bag of potato chips from Alex and refused to give her any unless she conceded that Monday was indeed the first day of the week. Alex insisted it was Sunday and had to watch as the potato chips got fewer and fewer. She conceded just to get the bag of potato chips back.

Then Speedy decided to explain to Alex what each day of the week means. The explanation went like this:

Monday - the day when you start making MONey.

Tuesday - the day you get to CHOOSE (rhymes with “Tues”, get it?) whether to work or not because you already worked hard on Monday.

Wednesday - the day people get married (WEDdingDAY, okay?).

Thursday - just an ordinary day (apparently, he ran out of wise ideas).

Friday - the day you enjoy FRIED chicken, FRIED fish and all things FRIED.

Saturday - you SAT around all day because you still feel too full from all the FRIED things you ate on FRIDay.

Sunday - the day to be lazy when you just lie in the SUN and take it easy.

Alex realized it was useless getting the bag of potato chips back because she couldn’t eat while laughing hysterically. The only thing she got out of the whole thing was an aching jaw.

Me? I almost spilled my coffee while listening to Speedy’s speech about the days of the week. My husband is such a genius. :)

the 1st day of the week will always be Sunday mainly because of what that day represents, at least for me — is it God (sunday) or money (monday) ? — changed my wordpress settings for what’s more important :) have a great week ahead!

btw, i blog hop at pinoycook.net from time to time — that site really helped me in learning how to cook — i can still remember the taste of my superb chicken curry the other day — thanks to your easy-to-follow recipes and easy-to-find ingredients. keep cooking and blogging!

From Wikipedia: “In most of Europe today, South America, and parts of Asia, Monday is considered to be the first day of the week and is literally named as such in languages such as Mandarin (xingqiyi) and Lithuanian (pirmadienis). The ISO prescribes Monday as the first day of the week with ISO-8601 for software date formats.”

My week starts on Wednesday after all the deadlines have been met. Then, it’s time to enjoy. :)

I’m also confused which should be the first day of the week. I thought it would be Monday because it’s the day when you’ll have to go back to work. Or maybe it’s really Sunday because as early as this day, you’re already whining because tomorrow you’ll have to go back to work. Pointless ;-)

Anyway, Thursday is the hottest day of the week and the day when you’ll have to drink the largest volume of water. Hehehe ;-)

Thursday is the hottest? I never noticed. But I have noticed that blog traffic peaks from Tuesday to Thursday. hehehe

I checked out the definition of Sunday in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday), and found out a lot of interesting things, i.e., Greek translation of Monday to Thursday implies that Sunday is the 1st day of the week, and that any month that starts on a Sunday will have Friday the 13th (this one should have been pretty obvious). :-P

In my mind, and I think what I was taught back in school (many, many years ago), Sunday is the 1st day of the week, but given that I also consider Sunday as part of the week-end, then I guess Monday is the week-start. :-) Basta, Monday is my least favorite day, except the Mondays that PGMA have declared as non-working holidays!

The best day is Thursday:

Thursday - just an ordinary day (apparently, he ran out of wise ideas).

HAHAHA. Ang kulit! :D

If I go along Speedy’s logic, then Saturday is the first day of the week. At least that’s how it’s been here in the Middle East. Thursday and Friday is their equivalent of our Saturday and Sunday.

Even their calendar (Hejira), which is based on lunar cycle, is different. 12 months pero kulang sa araw. 10 days difference in one year.

Nikita, ako din, I like Monday least. A mixture of not wanting the weekend to end and a dread of all the work that has to be done for the next five days. Most of all, it’s the thought of waking up early. Nakow, I hate waking up early. But the girls’ lunchboxes need to be prepared.

Lance, kaya pati mga anak ang kukulit eh. Manang-mana.

BlogusVox, goes to show it’s really a culture thing, right? And since you have a blog now, baka naman pwede ka mag-post ng pic ng calendar ng Middle East. Nakaka-intrigue.

Just wanted to know, anyone, please educate me, does sabbath fall on saturday or sunday.

After being indoctrinated with theology classes in my elementary years, i remember that in the Old Testament, God kept Sabbath the seventh day, as the day of the rest.

Now if Sabbath falls on Sunday, then Alex is right, the first day of the week is really Monday.

hahaha, got you with thirst-day ;-)

20

Connie Veneracion 05.27.08 at 12:48 pm

Mary, it’s Wimpex. WARNING: high power consumption.

Pirkash, that would make Speedy right.

Kotsengkuba, ayos! Shall we compose a new nursery rhyme? LOL

Kotsengkuba 05.28.08 at 1:09 am

we both realize now that humor would be given more justice when spoken rather than written ;-)

once there was a family of fox. the father fox, the mother fox and the baby watches.

this could be subject for moderation
