Jojo Robles’ column yesterday was about two e-mails that had been circulating around for the past couple of days. I received the first e-mail four days ago from Ben Razon to whom it had been forwarded by someone else. Let me quote the text in full.
This happened to my sister-in-law just this morning at the ateneo campus. Alarming and I thought you would be wary too of this kind of people, especially driving mothers (like me). Wala tayong kalaban-laban sa mga lalaking ganito! Kilala nyo ba siya kaya?…
Hi Ette, Something scary happened to me today at around 11:30 a.m. at the Ateneo parking area along the alternate road leading to Gate3. I arrived at the area at around 9:00 a.m. The parking area was already full. However, I noticed that some cars were parked far apart from each other and that their drivers can be requested to move closer to each other to accommodate my small Honda City. I approached the owner of a gray Toyota Camry with plate number UNY 220. He was sleeping inside his car so I tapped lightly and apologetically requested him to move his car. He refused to move, asserting that I cannot fit into the space. He told me to bother the driver beside him instead. I left him alone because I did not want to be a nuisance. The other vehicle was a van driven by a family driver. He was also sleeping, mind you, but he graciously moved his van. I was finally able to park but it was a very tight fit. If the owner of the Camry had moved as well, it would have been perfect.
However, I did not want to bother the man who was clearly irritated. At 11:30 a.m., I arrived at my car with the two boys in tow. I was so shocked to find the man owning the Camry to be waiting for me. As I approached, he opened his window and said, “PUTANG INA MO!” in front of my two kids and his son who was seated at the back of his car covering his ears. He continued his assault and said, “You don’t wake up people and manipulate them.” I told him in a calm voice that I apologized to him and left him alone because he didn’t want to be bothered. He kept on accusing me of being manipulative (I don’t even know why? It was just a request). And this is where it gets scary. He threatened me and said that IT IS PEOPLE LIKE ME HE PUTS A GUN TO THE HEAD TO. I asked him if he was connected to the military and he said, “E ikaw, sino ka ba?” I said I was just a simple housewife. He then proceeded to call me stupid over and over again. I just let it pass because I didn’t want to provoke him. He has a PPSA (Philippine Practical Shooting Association) sticker at the back and he just might make good his threat.
Luckily, I still had enough wits about and was able to get his plate number and his picture through my cellphone camera. I immediately reported this incident to Mr. Leoncio D. Miralao, Administrator of the ADMU Physical Plant. This person is highly volatile and I don’t want my boys, or any other child for that matter, anywhere near him. He might start shooting people if he gets into another altercation. What shocks me is that he is an Ateneo parent (a parent!) who should be reinforcing the Ignatian values that the Ateneo has been diligently drilling into our children. Furthermore, I’m sure the PPSA espouses responsible gun ownership and will certainly frown upon this member’s behavior. Attached is his picture and you should be well-advised to steer clear of him if ever you see him around Ateneo!
The e-mail had an attachment — a photo of the male driver that the woman was complaining about. First impression? Well……
When I received the e-mail, it had apparently been forwarded several times already. One of the comments among the earlier recipients was “Any friendly broadsheets out there?” But I did not even forward the e-mail, much less write a column about it. Anyone can make up a story and considering people’s penchant for intrigue, on the internet especially, it’s easy to start and spread rumors. I did ask Ben, however, if the woman was willing to execute an affidavit and to provide proof that she reported the matter to the Ateneo authorities. You know, because without credible evidence, it’s a recipe for libel. I was not sticking my neck out for someone I don’t even know and for a story that I could not verify.
Anyway, later that night, I asked Speedy to look at the photo. Speedy is a member of PPSA and ARMSCOR (and we do have a PPSA sticker on the car) and he might know the guy. He didn’t.
A day later, the guy’s story came out and Ben forwarded the e-mail. The full text follows.
A friend of mine received an e-mail and she was so shocked at what it contained. Its main gist was to destroy my name and image. And so I am writing you to narrate what really happened.
Devil in grade school parking
On Thursday, August 7,2008, exam week, I parked my car at 6:45 am in the parking lot along the football field fronting the Blue Eagle Gym. This is my daily routine. I do my chores or sleep in the car while waiting for dismissal time. I was sleeping when a woman disturbed my sleep just to tell me to move my car so that she could squeeze hers in. After looking around, I told her it would be impossible as we would be like sardines. She said she would even talk to 2 drivers beside me to also move. Imagine, her daily modus operandi of coming late and asking 3 drivers to move just to accommodate her! Coming late during exam week, when car volume is tripled, means that she has to park near the softball field already. And this is what she cannot accept–that she has to walk far because she arrives late. Ang taba kasi. Slots are fully taken by 7:30 am. Maybe I look like a driver too, so she thought she
could manipulate me also like her regular victims. So after turning down her request, I went back to sleep. At around 10:20 am, I woke up shockingly to find my left side blocked! She parked her car 6 inches away, almost hitting the left rear door. I could not go out of the car! Even if she manipulated the driver to the left, her car only went in the small slot 3/4 of the way. Thus her engine was blocking the doors.
So I waited 30 minutes for her return but she did not. So I got out the right side and fetched my kid. We entered again inconveniently through the right side. We were about to leave–the car was already in first gear when, lo and behold, she arrived with her kids. I just looked at her, telling myself what king (kind?) of a woman is this. She then approaches her driver door to enter.
Again, me and my kid get my 2nd shock of the morning when she slams open her door to hit my driver door! This prompted my kid to blurt out, “Daddy, what was that!” At that point, after forgiving her first 2 mischievousness, my blood boiled. I opened my window and cursed her. This was the last straw as this was physical and already destruction of another’s property. And so the parking altercation she was seeking happened. If she wants to insinuate that I am a military man and that I own a gun, just by looking at t-shirt logos and car stickers, then that is her personality disorder. If she fought with an Ateneo student wearing a taekwando t-shirt, she would surely say, this kid kicked me!
Napahiya itong babae sa kanyang mga kaibigan na driver when I turned down her request. Just like a kid who throws a tantrum because he did not get his lollipop.
This manipulator, trouble-maker, and blackmailer should be stopped. If she wants me to be an internet star, then that is her right. But she has besmirched the Ateneo name as she wants her friends to e-mail the whole world with her version and with my smiling picture. I was smiling because I had no guilt. If I was guilty, then I would have tried to hide my face and attempted to grab her cell phone. She even lied further by stating that she apologized. She never did and instead blocked my exit.
I just don’t want other people to be blackmailed by her again. She uses her cell phone and internet in a malicious manner. On her next traffic incidents, she will again threaten the drivers with her cell phone camera which she adores. Ang babaw ano.
Now you know the real story partner. Thanks. Joe.
Obviously, they can’t be both telling the truth. My question to Ben was how much of each version could be true and how much could be lies? Jojo Robles was smart. He didn’t jump either after reading the woman’s e-mail. He wrote about the incident after reading both versions. Someone desperate would have taken advantage of the scoop and beat every newspaper writer to it.

methinks it doesn’t even merit a column space — which is very precious — unless the information is verified and malaki ang implication sa madlang bayan. just my two centavos…
Connie Veneracion 08.15.08 at 8:34 pm
Actually, it was verified later. Somewhat. Along with the second string of e-mails (the guy’s version) were some info about the report made to Ateneo authorities and the investigation that ensued.
What really bothered me was how some people automatically started looking for a “friendly broadsheet” after the woman’s story came out. I mean, parang, sakay ba agad, ganun? Hindi pa ba common knowledge how much of such stuff ended in the hoax section of Snopes?
Jon Limjap 08.15.08 at 10:50 pm
Naaaliw ako sa mga naglalabasan ng baho at nagpapataasan ng ihi sa internet. Dinadaan sa forwarded mail. Kaya hindi na ako nagfoforward ng emails warning people of something or someone.
Sayang lang sa panahon ng magbabasa.

mismo! atsaka anu yung term na “friendly broadsheet”? pag di napublish agad ibig sabihin hindi “friendly” yung broadsheet?

Ugh, could be worse. Hahaha. I am in no more Daily Posts phase now. I’ve transcended that era hahahaha. Sorry Connie, but I still ready yer blog everyday!
Connie Veneracion 08.16.08 at 9:33 am
Jon, may mga nakakaaliw pa rin naman hehehe
luthien, and dating eh parang anti-people and anti-truth ka if you don’t jump and write, ano? grrr
ex-art student, every blogger goes through the slow phase. Some overcome; others don’t. Sana, you’ll find your momentum again.

This is funny. Even mentioning Ateneo as if it produces saints. Reminds me of that Loyola park incident where a guy shot a pregnant woman over parking space. His lawyer insisted it was an accident and not intentional. “Hindi nya magagawa yun, Atenista yan”. So is Mike A.
Connie Veneracion 08.16.08 at 3:38 pm
HAHAHAHA Love the punch line. I should add: So is Erap.
mimi 08.17.08 at 12:21 am
I have been a parent driver of my sons in Ateneo for many years. I’ve only once encountered a woman acting like a donya who owns the parking lot…
Anyway, I don’t understand why people keep forwarding emails which are not verified. If I were to judge the content of the two emails, the version of the man is indeed more realistic.
Trosp 08.17.08 at 3:17 pm
IMO, the woman’s version is more credible. The man’s version is inconsistent.
Tito 08.17.08 at 3:37 pm
Nothing more than an irritating bad lady driver having an altercation with an equally pissed off pa macho driver who should have thinked twice than cursing the lady (or bitch as the case may be). The question that should have been asked here is whether the guy parked his car properly or fitted his car with just enough space between slots.Judging from the emails of both parties, its clear that both believed they are telling the truth based on their on perception of reality with the lady blowing this incident out of proportion. The lady should have just let this one go as one of those bad days. Just miscommunication brought out by their own individual daily stress.
Connie Veneracion 08.17.08 at 3:43 pm
What’s so interesting to me is this: Notice how the woman seems to be angling for sympathy by playing the lady in distress (she was scared, she felt threatened)?
On the other hand, notice the man’s references to her state of mind (personality disorder) to discredit her?
I think that says a lot about our culture.

oh my, that’s scary… wow. ateneo campus wasn’t really that safe after all.
Jeffrey from Lubao 08.17.08 at 10:06 pm
hindi na lang kasi nag park sa malayo ung wala syang katabi at naglakad, na-exercise pa sya e mataba nga daw sabi nung guy. as if naman napakalayo ng lalakaren nya, ewan ko ba pagkaliit-liit na space e ipipilit pa nung babae.
claire 08.18.08 at 8:33 am
Ms. Connie, since you’re a lawyer, readers like me, would like to know, who between the two, is telling the truth? Would appreciate your answer.
I’m an avid reader of your blog. Thank you!
rolly 08.18.08 at 10:38 am
Your truth, my truth and the truth. Me point sila pareho. Nakakainis yung taong hindi marunong mag-park properly and see a lot of them in malls. Minsan, sobrang swapang at ayaw matabihan, igigitna yung kotse nila. Yun namang sa point nung lalaki, tama rin. E dadating siya ng huli especially on an exam day, tapos manggugulo siya sa parking. PAreho lang silang dapat pag untugin siguro haha
Connie Veneracion 08.18.08 at 11:19 am
Claire, I won’t know that unless I get a chance to cross-examine both.
jojo 08.18.08 at 3:23 pm
hi connie. long time no eat. thanks for the compliment. actually, i am not in the business of forwarding emails without verifying them. as far as the ateneo incident goes, i went as far as getting the registered owner of the camry and the complete names of the two protagonists (you will notice the columns had their initials. di ko lang ginamit yung names kasi baka libelous right, counselor?) anyways, as careful reading of the column will show the stuff that i uncovered on top of the initial “lead” that the email exchange gave me. as for your reader who says newspaper space is too precious to waste on such an incident, i think that’s relative. as the father of two ateneo grade schoolers — and a former hatid-sundo veteran — i just thought people may want to know about it. personally, i believe (as i wrote) that a guy who wears a ppsa-ipsc-armscor shirt outside of a firing range is really a magnet for trouble, whether or not he is actually “packing.” see ya around connie!
Connie Veneracion 08.18.08 at 3:31 pm
Jojo, re “long time no eat”
You really should take me to lunch again. Choice ko ha. Sa pinaka-mahal. HAHAHAHAHA
jojo 08.18.08 at 3:37 pm
for a woman with such excellent taste in food, my friend, you are committing the grave mistake of believing that the price on the menu has something to do with the quality of the food. minsan dadalhin kita sa chinatown, where the food is as good as the price is dirt cheap. sama natin si chin wong para meron tayong translator at mag-iidentify ng kakainin natin hehe
richard 08.19.08 at 8:20 am
sa school namin matino naman lahat- maaga kasi dumating- pag late pareho ng pasaway babae at lalaki
dapat wag ma late

BlogusVox: “Even mentioning Ateneo as if it produces saints…. “Hindi nya magagawa yun, Atenista yan”. So is Mike A.”
Partner, linawin mo naman yung tinutukoy mo. Nagmamahal, isang Mike A. na Atenista.
Miguk 08.19.08 at 2:32 pm
Wow! I’ve heard of road rage and now parking rage!
BlogusVox 08.19.08 at 4:29 pm
micketymoc, oo nga ano. Pareho nga pala ang initial nyo. “A” as in Arroyo yun pards hindi Aquino. But I know you knew that all along. Kumusta na?
Bianca 08.21.08 at 1:52 pm
I agree with mimi, the guy’s version is more believable.
monch 08.24.08 at 10:42 am
I witnessed the incident, because i am parked beside the male parent car. That morning, since it was a exam week, most cars are double parked already. Out of the blue, here’s comes a lady driver who first surveyed the area, in assessing whom she can disturbed. Knocking the window of some cars & asking them to moved. in order to her to fit in, she should asked at least 3 to 4 cars in order to make way for her car to park.
Only one driver give in to her request.so she parked without any consideration in blocking the driver’s door of the male driver. yes, it is 6 inches apart. Both of the drivers side of the involved cars is unpassable.
in my opinion,The statement of the male driver is true. i leave to the people to decide. Ateneo parking is on a first come first serve basis.
Connie Veneracion 08.24.08 at 2:45 pm
monch, did you actually witness the altercation between them?
yokolok 09.07.08 at 3:04 am
nobody is right…this incident supposedly happened in front of minors - students…well, it shows the type of parents they have…while the guy’s story is seemingly more believable, and someone seemingly verified the incident…there is something in the guy’s statement, a comment he made that might be indicative of his personality…”ang taba kasi”…hmmm
Norbert S 09.07.08 at 10:50 am
To prevent this event from happening again is to provide lines. Any car that does not park between the line should be punished for being stupid.
Harrell 09.08.08 at 7:52 am
Mag-commute na lang kasi. Sayang pa gas.
Silverlokk 10.09.08 at 3:29 pm
A friend of mine in Ateneo Administration says that he mediated a meeting between the two to iron out their differences. Ms Parlade and Mr Unson have issued a joint statement that the issue has been resolved, and would everyone please stop sending and resending the emails. Haven’t been able to find a copy of that statement online though.
Connie Veneracion 10.09.08 at 4:04 pm
Silverlokk, re “everyone please stop sending and resending the emails”
Wow. People are still at it? Amazing. But you know what? You’re doing the parties to the incident more damage that all those people combined. You NAMED THEM.
