Tea cups that do more

By Connie Veneracion on October 21, 2007

When Chateau mentioned Shuin in a comment a few months back, little did I know that Speedy had been going there for ages. He had brought home frozen dumplings a couple of times, smoked chicken and, just the other day, a bottle of ginger sauce which, when mixed with soy sauce and sesame seed oil, becomes the perfect dipping sauce for dumplings.

When Speedy (oh, he has something to say about the Glorietta bombing) mentioned that Shuin has a lot of food products for sale aside from frozen dumplings, I told him I wanted to go and see for myself. We went yesterday. The food stuff, I’ll write about in Pinoy Cook but the tea cups that I bought, I’m going to show you here.

We used to brew our tea in a glass kettle with a removable wire strainer which had long rusted. Shuin was selling these same tea kettles and I was about to get a new one when the sales girl showed me these amazing tea cups.

These tea cups have removable strainers — ceramic strainers that, unlike wire strainers, will never rust.

Just place a pinch or so of tea leaves directly into the strainer and pour in hot water.

After two minutes, just lift the ceramic strainer and your hot green tea is ready to drink.

The tea cup, with cover and strainer, sells at PhP99.00. Great price, eh?

Shuin is located along Araneta Avenue in Quezon City, beside Garcia’s meat store.

ohh nice… I like those. I’m sure I can get those here, but I’m also sure they’d be too expensive!

Hi Connie,

Happy Birthday!!! It’s still October 20 here. :)

auee, but isn’t there a chinatown there?

Thanks, sofie. :)

Hi Connie! Belated birthday hugs!

Nice little shop, no? Naloloka ako pag pumapasok doon hehe. The siomai and fresh noodles are great too… I shall await your review on their food at Pinoy Cook.

Those teacups I take for granted.

Great price indeed! I bought my 250mL plastic tumbler here for 18RMB (around 3USD) and they only have wire strainers. Now the water leaks on the between the tumbler itself and the supposedly tight strainer cover. Napansin ko lang nung natuluan ako ng mainit na tsaa sa leeg while sipping :D

Thanks, Chateau. :)

Unahan ko na ng review. The dumplings are wonderful! And they’re experimenting with dumplings with soup like the ones at Din Tai Fung. Saw a bunch in the freezer but they’re not yet for sale.

kotsengkuba, naku, we’ve had a lot of tea strainers in metal including the “balls” with a chain that you drop inside the cup. they stain badly then they rust. ceramic is a better idea.

What kind of soup would that be? It’s been a while since I’ve been there, it’s my hub who goes to buy our stash. May dumplings and noodles pa nga ako sa freezer hehe.

Dumplings with broth inside — sealed in. As in the meatball is swimming in broth and both are inside the sealed dumpling.

hindi pa madaling matakpan ng tea leaves yung butas? yun lang kase nakikita kong disadvantage because of the few holes. pero pagdating sa linisan, mas madali nga syang linisin at hindi pa kinakalawang.

about the dumplings, may mga ganyan din dito and masarap naman. may napanood akong movie ni Stephen Chow (star of Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle) ang tawag nila jan “Pissing Beef Balls” LOL

Connie, do you happen to know if they have different designs of the tea cups? I am fond of “randomly collecting” big mugs but after I had my dad bought me a teapot from Japan (and he forgot to include teacups) and a bunch of tea leaves, I decided I’ll start collecting cute teacups this time. Little did I know that it is quite difficult to find cute and not-so-expensive teacups in the mall. I even only got myself to buy a small china teacup from Living well and it was just plain white (thus only 1 pc. Haha). So you’re post is just so right for me. Thank you! :)

Umm, btw, how do you exactly commute going to the Shuin store?

kotsengkuba, naka-soak naman yung tea leaves so kahit matakpan yung butas ok lang.

Shanelle, yeah, they do although only two designs were available when were there. Depleted stocks. Re commute: naku, I don’t know.

Huhuhu. Sana they’ll still have some for me to buy when I get to visit that place. It is perfect for office use pa naman.

I showed the pictures to my mom and was asking her to look for the place for me giving her the Araneta Ave address. She mentioned though that it should be in Cubao somewhere near Araneta Coliseum. Is that true? I thought it’ll be somewhere in Sta. Mesa. Hahaha. Hope you can confirm for me na lang.

I’m really hoping that the area is just few MRT stations away *keeping fingers crossed*

Thanks a lot again! :)

Shannelle, Araneta Coliseum is far, far away from Araneta Avenue which is on the opposite side of EDSA, perpendicular to Quezon Avenue.

Those are really nice teacups Connie. And you are so correct
with the metal balls with a chain that you drop inside the cup.

Just to help Shannelle, you can check out this website to help you locate Araneta Ave, http://mapcentral.ph.

PhP99.00? I love the dainty designs and the practicality of the tea cups. Thanks for sharing the wonderful find, Connie.

Belated Happy Birthday :)

Yup there is… but everything here is expensive so I can only imagine what the price will be for something “fancy” like these cups

Mommy S, yep, we’ve had more than half a dozen of those and it doesn’t matter whether they were cheap or expensive. The all ended up the same way.

Julie, actually, that was the only dainty design. The other one available was in yellow, blue and gold with dragons. Di type ni Speedy ehehehe

Auee, pag uwi mo, stock up on cheapos hehehehe
