A wifely advice

A couple of days ago, Speedy and I were watching a TV program on Bio Channel about a man and his daughter who were reunited after many, many years. The father and his wife separated when the girl was just a toddler, both eventually remarried, and the mother refused to allow any contact between father and daughter. The mother even went to the extent of having the girl’s... (more »»)
Sometimes, it’s okay not to be the first

In the age of mass media, and the internet, people have developed the “scoop” mentality. Everyone wants to be the first. Media outfits will pay good money to get the scoop on an event and internet publishers sometimes try to out-scoop media. The more serious movie goer and book reader do it to their peers too. You can see it from the way people queue up on the box office... (more »»)
Dear Teacher Blah

When I was a student, Home Economics was exclusively for girls. We cooked and sewed while the boys had their Automotive class. That was then. Cooking is now part of TLE (technology and livelihood education), a subject that boys and girls alike are required to take and complete. Our conservative society is finally embracing modern ideas that have banished the notion that cooking... (more »»)

Except for those required grade-school essays, I don’t remember jotting down New Year’s resolutions. This year though, I will. I have three in my mind right now, the list is likely grow longer as the year progresses, but three is a good number to start with. 1. Stop trying to make sense of Philippine politics. The only way to understand politics is to understand... (more »»)
Sometimes, TV doesn’t suck
Late on Sunday evening, I was able to catch the last portion of the most recent of the 2009 Intelligence Squared debate series on BBC News Network. The title of this column is a recast of a statement in an article in Current.com, “TV doesn’t always suck,” describing the debate. The topic of the debate: “The Catholic church is a force for good in the world.” Speakers... (more »»)
Perceptions and images of women
In a television commercial, an attractive young woman calls out “Darling” to the out-of-focus image of a man in the crowd. She runs to him, he picks her up, she tells him she missed him and he says the same to her. The camera focuses on his face which, in wry Filipino humor, would be described as a face only a mother could love. Next comes the message that more women suffer... (more »»)
The evening news, some two years ago
This video has been in YouTube for over two years having been originally uploaded in February of 2007. I’ve never seen it until a fellow lawyer shared it in Facebook. It really redefines news reporting. What I don’t know is whether it was aired in the interest of balanced news reporting or to provide entertainment. Note that it was aired in an evening news program. Read More →
So, there’s going to be a CSI movie

Despite my not being a TV addict, I am addicted to CSI — still addicted to CSI after all these years. It’s the only thing on television than can make me put down a book or make me leave my computer. If we miss an episode on the regular schedule and we go out the following Sunday when there’s a replay, we make a real effort to be home by 9.00 p.m. to make it... (more »»)
Crime and privacy
(Today’s column) Just about every Filipino I know has been talking about the tragedy that struck Ted Failon’s wife. And just about everyone discussing it is, at the same time, conducting a guessing game as to whether it is a suicide or a homicide and, if it is the latter, who the probable killer is. Smack in the middle of the speculations came an appeal from an... (more »»)
Who’s heard of Henry Enfield?
We have BBC in our Dream satellite subscription but I have never seen the “Harry and Paul” show. In fact, I’ve never heard of Henry Enfield until today and only because the show has the become the subject of an official protest by the Philippine government. The scene, first broadcast on 26 September, was part of a running joke in which a family from the south... (more »»)
