Should I replace my granite kitchen countertops?

by Connie Veneracion on September 2, 2008

When news reports about the alleged dangers of granite countertops (link points to a New York Times article — you may need to register for a FREE account to view it) in the kitchen came out several weeks ago, I knew it would be followed by press releases from the kitchen manufacturers claiming the exact [...]

Lighting can change the mood of a house

by Connie Veneracion on July 9, 2008

For someone like me who loathes knick-knacks and flower vases (especially with plastic flowers), the idea of decorating a house with functional pieces is more appealing. Lighting fixtures serve a dual purpose. They illuminate the house and serve as ornaments too.
If you can patiently scour shops and home depots, finding the lighting fixtures with the [...]

Kitchen renovation

by Connie Veneracion on June 27, 2008

The kitchen (the entire ground floor, in fact) had an all-white motif when we first saw the house. This was how the kitchen looked.

Four days ago, the renovations in the kitchen were almost done. The cabinets now sport a flat dark wood-stain finish that goes better with the granite countertops.

What’s “flat dark wood-stain finish”? Flat [...]

Custom-made hardwood furniture

by Connie Veneracion on June 20, 2008

Yesterday was order-the-furniture day. We already had “some ideas” about where to buy the furniture but we had not really made up our minds. We had scoured more than a dozen places, including Tiendesitas, Greenhills and malls, and still hadn’t made any final decisions. We were clear on one thing though — we want hardwood [...]

One option is [...]

The refrigerator that’s right for you

by Connie Veneracion on June 12, 2008

I grew up with a huge frost-free Kelvinator. When Speedy and I bought our first fridge back in the 1990s, we ditched the “frost-free” feature to save on power consumption. It was a 12 cubic foot two-door Kelvinator. That was the fridge we brought when we moved to the suburb in 2001.
In 2004, when we [...]

Interior design books that inspire

by Connie Veneracion on June 4, 2008

If you need interior design inspiration, there’s nothing like browsing through books. The idea, of course, is not to copy what’s in the book but to come up with a personal version of what’s in it.

600 Decorating Ideas is filled with picture-pretty ideas. Although most are ornamental without being truly functional, this book provides enough [...]

Kitchen island: a necessity, a convenience or a luxury?

by Connie Veneracion on June 3, 2008

To answer the question in the title: it depends on what kind of cook you are, how large your kitchen is and how your kitchen is organized. If you’re the kind of cook who likes to prepare several dishes at the same time, an extra work space is more than welcome. If your kitchen is [...]
