We were at the doctor’s late yesterday afternoon for my post-surgical check-up and he said the incision is healing nicely and won’t be requiring any more bandages. If he only knew… The bandages had been off for days. What could I do? The past few days had been terribly hot and the adhesives were making my skin itch. Besides, the day I started cooking again — and sweating like hell — the adhesives started to peel off. Speedy made me promise to put on fresh dressing for the check-up because “Pagagalitan ka ng doktor (The doctor will scold you).” So I took pains dressing up the incision — with symmetrical strips of surgical tape and all. And the doctor said I didn’t need them anymore.
But the truth is, although getting up is no longer such a face-contorting effort, the discomfort is still there. I feel sore and stiff alternately in the area where the incision is. And I was honest enough to tell the doctor that we’re moving in a few weeks and there’s a lot of packing to do. He specifically said I cannot lift heavy boxes and it was such a blessing in disguise because who wants to lift boxes of books and dinner plates anyway? Speedy told the doctor that incision or no incision, I wouldn’t lift heavy boxes anyway. Hmmm… I remember lifting some when we moved to this house so I’m sure he was exaggerating and making the doctor think I am such a señorita at home.
Anyway… some genius quipped a long time ago that the first step is always the hardest. But once made, the rest is easier. The first step in the packing drama has yet to be taken and no one seems to want to start. We already told the girls that they have to start now before the school year begins because their schedules will get very hectic pretty soon. But the boxes are still sitting in the garage and no one’s made any effort at all.
So, maybe, I’ll make the first step. I’ve even come up with nice guidelines and a timetable.
Day 1 - Sort out everything and decide which can be discarded right now. It isn’t smart to pack EVERYTHING then decide after moving that half the things we packed were things we meant to get rid off anyway. So, sort out all the stuff. And do the packing room by room. Start with the most cluttered rooms.
Day 2 - Start with the bedroom. Throw out Speedy’s collection of nails and screws and nuts and bolts that he keeps deep inside his closet. Oh, yes, he’s such a hoarder.

Day 3 - Next is the living room area and the cabinets with Speedy’s collection of unused T-shirts, baseball caps, etcetera. THROW OUT EVERYTHING THAT HAS NOT SEEN THE LIGHT OF DAY IN THE LAST TWO OR THREE YEARS. Told you, Speedy’s a hoarder.
DAY 4 - Speedy’s study area. Never mind what’s inside the empty cans of SPAM (oh, yes, he loves to collect them). Throw them all out. Well, unless there are coins in them, in which case I can keep the coins and then throw out the cans.

Day 5 - The garage. Oh, this is my pet peeve. An old aquarium full of Speedy’s junk — old calendars and other unrecognizable objects which, according to him, are car tools and supplies. Huh?
Day 6 - By this time, the house will be spacious and airy and packing won’t seem so daunting. Start organizing. What does that mean — “organizing”? Oh, I don’t know yet. I will have figured it out by then. ![]()

Hope you’re okay now Ms. Connie; btw, does it hurt when you laugh? hope not.

Hi Miss Connie!
When we moved to our current home seven years ago, we gave away a lot of stuff, including three beds and a sala set. I remember that my mon instructed us how to pack things neatly and which stuff goes with the same box. My mom is such a neat freak so she hates “abubots”.
However, she still kept our toys when we were kids, including my Cabbage Patch Kids doll Eddie Betty.
Good luck po in packing!

Ormocanon, I was just telling Speedy bawal magpatawa kasi masakit.
Jaecel, we’re also thinking about a garage sale when everything’s been sorted out. The sala set, the dining set, curtains… so many things we can’t bring. And yes, the kids are keeping most of their stuffed toys too. Ties, I guess.

When we transferred,3years ago we didnt have do anything even packingand unpacking,I hired a professional mover,I just instructed them on what things should be thrown out and kept and then gave the address of my new apartment then pick up the valuable items with us and we went straight shopping and into a coffee shop. We stay out till they finished moving, which took almost 4hours,when we entered our new home, all our things were already in place, clothes in the cabinet dishes and kitchen wares in the racks and in the cupboard, books in the book shelves and house were already cleaned even unwashed dishes were already stored, the entire house was really organized to even small details.
Connie Veneracion 06.07.08 at 1:28 pm
Naku, Edgar, do that here and there won’t be anything to move. Malamang, manakaw lang lahat.
Besides, I don’t think there are professional movers here, only trucks for hire.
Ami 06.07.08 at 3:21 pm
I remembered my tubal ligation after a normal delivery, it was awful. I can’t walk with my body straight kasi masakit. A month later, mahirap pa rin lumakad ng mabilis! Grabe!
On packing… I used to live in one of those tiny apartments in Krus na Ligas for 2 years and when we moved… it was amazing how much boxes we filled up because of all the abubots. Naka tatlong trips yata yung kinuha naming truck.
Connie Veneracion 06.07.08 at 4:00 pm
Ami, I can sympathize about the length of time it takes to feel normal again. With each CS delivery I had, months after feeling ko kumikirot pa rin lalo na pag maginaw.

hi connie,
moving to a new house is so exciting, but the packing and unpacking is not. would like to offer you a tip which worked well for me when we moved to a new place many years ago.
surely you will hire ‘lipat bahay’ truck with their ‘pahinantes’ na magbubuhat ng inyong mga furniture/boxes etc. which they will load on the truck and unload into your new home.
so that you will not be watching over each and every box and directing them to where you want them to be carried, designate letters for each area of your house: A for sala, B for dining, C for master bedroom, etc.
then label all boxes which should go to A, B, C, etc. that way, the ‘kargadors’ will know where to bring each box. just visibly post big letters on the wall of each area of your house.
at least, when they start unloading your boxes in your new house, hindi mo na kelangan ituro sa kanila kung saan dadalhin ang alin. tignan lang nila ang kahon at hanapin ang letra ng bawa’t kwarto, alam na nila.
pasensya na if you already thought of doing this (i.e., unsolicited advice from me). anyway, just happy to help you (and excited for you).
Kotsengkuba 06.07.08 at 6:13 pm
hahaha, naalala ko na naman ang collections ni speedy and how i can relate
Connie Veneracion 06.07.08 at 9:36 pm
Sue, that is so wise! In the past, I labeled the boxes according to their content but when you have four boxes all labeled “books”, it gets confusing which box has the cookbooks and which has the encyclopedia. So, now, a box of books should be labeled “Cookbooks → Kitchen”, “Fiction → bedroom”, “Encyclopedia → Study”… Smart! Thanks.
Kotsengkuba, naku, magbagong-buhay na kayo, ano ba?
Nikita 06.08.08 at 8:59 am
Naku, amazing ang paglilipat. I remember we stayed in one bedroom at my parents’ place before we moved to our house. But somehow, after all the boxes were packed and transferred, ang dami pala and hindi na “empty” ang 4-bedroom house namin. And to be honest, when I stored stuff in some cabinets, parang di ko na yata binalikan since then (mostly wedding gifts, I think).
Good luck sa paglilipat!
Connie Veneracion 06.08.08 at 9:06 am
Alam mo Nikita, when we moved from Manhattan to my parents’ house, our stuff fit in one van. When we moved from my parents’ house to Antipolo, we had a truck. Ngayon, baka 2 trips ng truck hehehe. 3 trips pa nga kung lahat ng gamit ni Speedy dadalhin.
edgar villanueva 06.08.08 at 1:58 pm
michelle mp 06.08.08 at 6:31 pm
good luck packing all your stuff and moving into your new house!
by the way, did you have a laparoscophy procedure to remove your gallbladder?
i have gallstones and because of several reminders, including reading your blog, i will have the procedure done within the month.
Connie Veneracion 06.08.08 at 9:57 pm
No, Michelle, it was open surgery. The surgeon said laparoscopy was not recommended because there were complications. The gall bladder was already very swollen and had moved on top of some duct (can’t remember what the duct is called).
Ting 06.09.08 at 1:22 am
Sass, when we moved, I numbered my boxes and itemized all the contents of my boxes in a spreadsheet. Let’s face it, not all the boxes will be opened right away. In fact, chances are, some boxes might not be opened in the next 6 months or even years. When you’re trying to look for things, you can always look in your list and know exactly which box to open. It also gives you an idea whether there were any boxes missing while in transit.
Same thing with Sue, I labeled all the stuff so that the movers know exactly where to put them when they are being unloaded from the truck.
When I had my surgery by the way, once my dressing came off, I never replaced it. Here, I think doctors prefer the wounds to be exposed for fast healing but then we’re not exposed to a lot of pollution that you guys are subjected to everyday.
Connie Veneracion 06.09.08 at 8:39 am
Hi Ting, re “Let’s face it, not all the boxes will be opened right away.”
Oh, how true! You know, that’s why we have assignments. Everyone is incharge of his personal things (clothing, books, etc) then the kitchen is mine, DVDs are Sam’s responsibility, etc. I don’t want to be responsible for everything because I don’t want people asking me later on where everything is.
Ami 06.09.08 at 10:23 am
Naku, you had 2 CS and a gall bladder operation? So how’s your memory? My former boss suffered the same number of operations and she often forgot things she told me kaya we wanted put it in writing kahit di official, hahaha
Connie Veneracion 06.09.08 at 11:04 am
2 CS, one myomectomy before that, and the recent gall bladder surgery. My memory… still photographic hehehehe At least I’d like to think so. But I’m still very bad at organizing.
honey 06.09.08 at 11:53 am
Connie Veneracion 06.09.08 at 12:22 pm
Honey, mali, masakit pag malamig na, so after-the-fact rather than before-the-fact. Hindi ko pwede kompetensiyahin si Madame Auring.
Saka, pag sa pera, WALA AKONG NALILIMUTAN. HAHAHAHAHA
Lee 06.10.08 at 2:41 pm
Hi Con. There are professional packers and movers here in the Philippines (one of them is a client). While most of their clients are expats coming in or moving out of the country and companies transfering to another location, they also cater to a big chunk of the lipat-bahay market (would you believe?). Because of the nature of their business, they are very meticulous in ensuring that all their employees are honest and trustworthy, and that everything is handled carefully and efficiently.
Personally, I think one advantage of having the transfer outsourced to a professional is that pay may masira o mawala silang item, meron tayong madedemanda he he he.
Connie Veneracion 06.10.08 at 3:07 pm
Lee, I’ll be e-mailing you for the contact info just in case we need help. Actually, we’ve started packing already but you never know, right? Thanks a mil.
treehugger 06.12.08 at 9:57 am
Hi! Had a gall bladder operation in sept 2006. tried staying in bed for three days after the surgery and i almost died of boredom (we had no internet back then). so i ended up going to the office on my fourth day. never really had a long rest and so i can still feel pain sometimes for over a year after. that’s my long-winded way of saying to please be careful and take care of your cut.
Connie Veneracion 06.12.08 at 11:57 am
Hi Treehugger. Thanks. I’ve had 2 CS before and I know what you mean about feeling pain even after a year.
My husband will love you for that reminder. He says I’m insane to go shopping 7 days after the surgery. But then we’re moving so I have an excuse hehehe And I can understand the boredom part. Gosh, staying in bed all day is such a bummer.
peevee 06.12.08 at 3:08 pm
hi ms. connie!
hope you’re ok na after your operation… just remembered that when our family moved from qc to paranaque years ago, my father hired a professional movers company to pack our things. Though we packed the things in our bedrooms ourselves, they were the ones who packed our kitchen and living room. I remember they had this pretty cool suitcase with foam padding for fragile items like wine glasses and cups so we don’t have to wrap each piece in newspapers. Imagine the hassle of unpacking each one and having so many newspapers to discard!
Connie Veneracion 06.12.08 at 4:37 pm
Hi Peevee, I’m recovering and feeling okay, thanks. I am seriously considering the professional movers. The thing is we probably won’t have much to pack except for our books, clothes and the kitchen. We’re selling most of our existing furniture and appliances. If packing the kitchen becomes unmanageable (the stitches still hurt), I guess it’s professional movers then.
alice jones 10.27.08 at 4:06 pm
hi. love your blog. that professional mover and packer “lee” spoke of? of the “lipat-bahay” variety? i’m very interested. any chance i can get a contact number? thanks.
