She hates needles
It isn’t normal for Sam to sleep for more than six or seven hours a day. She’s the kind of person who thinks she’s missing out on so much by sleeping. It isn’t normal for her not to eat heartily either. Sam has a healthy appetite and when she skips meals, I always know there’s something wrong.
She’s sick. Sleeping for over 18 hours a day. For the past 24 hours, she has only eaten a couple of tablespoonfuls of rice, a little meat and, for dinner, a chicken leg. It’s been that way since Tuesday. Speedy insisted on a blood test last night so I roused Sam from bed and we went to a clinic. As usual, the dengue scare is hovering over our heads.
Thing is, it wasn’t very easy to get Sam to agree to the test. She hates needles. And she started whining as soon as I told her. She wouldn’t even let the nurses prick her finger unless I was right there beside her. She’s 15 years old but still a baby when it comes to needles. Can’t blame her though. I’m the same way.
When I relayed the test results to her doctor, she told me it was too early to rule out dengue. But Sam’s symptoms — muscular pains, painful throat, headaches and recurring low-grade fever — suggest a viral infection. Viral infection means no antibiotics which only work against bacteria. In short, if it’s a viral infection, it will pass. A waiting game. Meanwhile, we just have to make sure that Sam takes a lot of fluids. A lot of Ifs and Maybes and another blood test on Sunday.
Meanwhile, it’s Friday, my teaching day, and I have to conduct my classes via YM so I can stay at home with Sam. Thank goodness for the internet. And thank goodness I am handling Internet classes.

All the best to Sam. You’re right about a viral infection being a waiting game. My dad started having fever too yesterday. I feel kinda warm myself. Uso yata.
aside from heights, i’m also afraid of needles. not that i can’t go to clinics alone but it’s the reason why i hate medical tests, dentists and nurses. parang malaking injection ang tingin ko sa kanilang lahat.
i hope sam gets better sooner.
hope it’s not dengue. viral lang siguro yan. uso yata talaga eh. the weather’s much unpredictable these past days kasi.
me nga wasn’t able to sleep the whole night last night coz Nico’s got clogged and runny nose plus inflamed tonsils. but he’s better now.
Hirap talaga yang waiting game.

The best part of being sick is the attention and care of the loved ones. With more doctors and nurses in the family, we have nephew that always insist one thing from his mom. Once, his mom put the band-aid on him, he is on his way to recovery.

Hope Sam gets well soon. And hope it’s not dengue. My son had dengue when he was 9 years old, it was scary. He had to have blood transfusion. I also had dengue myself some years back but got over it without need of transfusion. Had to stay in the hospital for a week though. Napansin ko nga ngayon, maraming mga dengue mosquitoes na naman, despite not having rains. Maybe it’s the basura around us.
Pineapple juice is good. Vit. C helps much in combatting infections.

Mukhang hindi dengue (she’s a little better although still picky with food) but she still has to have another blood test tomorrow. If it’s negative, what a relief. But then, that means it might be viral and most likely airborne. Any one of us can catch it.
Ting, alam mo… at my age, I haven’t had measles yet. Neither have my kids. If it’s measles, chances are we’ll have an epidemic in the house. So, sana hindi.

Thanks. We’re off to the clinic in 2 hours. But she’s been eating ok all day yesterday, so, I’m really hopeful.
I hope that Sam is better. Lots of fluids and sunlight can help ward that off, para walang hawahan.
She’s gone back to school. Three days and it looks like no one’s caught whatever virus she was carrying.

Glad to know that Sam is better and that you did not get sick too. The weather is kinda erratic these days and those with asthma like my son suffer.

Yun exactly! Warm and humid in the middle of the day then cold at night until the early morning. I guess the viruses are having a heydey. Take care too, Julie. I used to think that asthma was just one of those things until I learned that it could lead to serious heart problems.
