Sexual Violence and Adult Sex Education

by Connie Veneracion on September 6, 2003

There was this story once that a doctor in a remote rural area in the Philippines who demonstrated the use of a condom by inserting his finger in it was shocked when, months later, one of the husbands complained that despite the use of condoms his wife was pregnant again. When asked how exactly he used the condom, the husband showed the doctor by inserting his finger in it.

Whether a meme or not, I do not know. There was a time when I found the anecdote funny. Until I realized that there may be some truth in it. Continuing belief in sexual myths coupled with lack of education among folks living in remote areas is a serious social and health problem. In General Santos City (Mindanao) for instance, fishermen still believe that penile insertions (boletas) are sexy and contribute pleasure to their sexual partners.

NGO educates tuna fishers about boletas and other violence against women

GENERAL SANTOS CITY –Boletas are paraphernalia of the culture of machismo embraced by generations of tuna fishers in the city considered as the country’s Tuna Capital.

Most tuna fishers in Southern Philippines, a study says, are users of boletas–small ball-shaped penile inserts–but they resist accepting the negative consequences of using them.

Despite the enduring myths, these penile insertions are neither sexy nor contribute to the pleasure of the sexual partner.

An estimated three out of ten fishermen have boletas, which are considered to be possible points of entry for HIV infections and can cause lacerations in the female sexual organ…

Particularly, the study also showed that most of the wives of the fishermen who have penile insertions complain about painful intercourse. Some of the women were reported to have sustained lacerations, including cases of women being hospitalized…

These were some of the findings of a study conducted by the Social Health Environment and Development (SHED) which also discovered that the use of boletas was already prevalent even prior to Spanish colonization.

Myths die hard.

I find the penile insertions (boletas) yucky. With the fast upgrade of technologies we could really say, myths die hard… male have humps with thesame reason… (machismo).

Why? Are’nt these male species happy with what they have?
