Playboy, Philippine edition
By Connie Veneracion on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 4:43 pm in Catholic Church, Playboy
Editor-in-chief Beting Laygo Dolor admits that the no-frontal-nudity policy is in deference to the Catholic Church which, he believes, if angered can start a snowball of howls from politicos and the business community. The Commission on Women of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines has made its excuses as to why no official statement regarding the Philippine version of Playboy magazine is forthcoming.
What the heck tasteful nudity means, I have no idea. Nudes as art I can understand. But how can anyone talk about tasteful nudity in reference to a commercial magazine that markets nudity? To be more precise, nudity can be as artful as it can be but place the art in a girlie magazine and it jumps from artistry to tacky.
While tacky is the way of life for many and we cannot get rid of the tacky (like Revillame, Lolit Solis, Boy Abunda, Eat Bulaga and all those teleseryes) because democracy dictates that we respect diversity, it would be far simpler to stop sugarcoating the nudity and the very essence of Playboy magazine. Call a spade a spade, and spare the public with the pagmamalinis. It’s a girlie magazine, period, and we can all just take it or leave it.
Based on the photos, the Playboy launch was just as tacky as the magazine. Of course, the so-called “lifestyle” bloggers will label it as a sosyal event. Such is their standard. Just like Malu Fernandez calling Perez Hilton a big time blogger.

Playboy magazine becomes famous worldwide because of their pretty young women posing nude in the magazines glossy pages, wearing nothing but a smile and a pair of socks,If the issues that will come out in the philippines are short of showing everything then it is like eating a candy with a wrapper on it,ha ha ha,But you know honestly I am against a magazines parading women in all their glory. It is degrading to the women of all ages and I see it as an insult to my mother and wife.I wonder what the moralists do when this magazine comes out on the newstands.

Before the moralists cry out against Playboy, they should say something about mags that have been on the stands long before — FHM, Maxim and even T3.

hahaha, I think it is more of an oddity than the so-called “tasteful nudity”…. when pressed how much skin they will show Beting answered with “maybe one nipple”, heck I hope it’s not from a one breasted woman, lol.
You are right and I agree…. stop the double talk and call a spade a spade, Playboy has always been a girlie magazine and whatever articles of substance she was talking about just escapes me…….

But there lies our problem. Kaya lalong nagmumukhang dirty is because they try to show it with something else. Nudity is nudity, period. Ilagay yan sa stand, pag ayaw mong bilhin, wag mong bilhin. In places where this are openly sold, nilalangaw lang yang mga yan. Ironically, yung pagbabawal sa kanila ang nagpapasarap sa kanila. Ang common idea natin kasi, kung alin ang bawal, yun ang masarap. hehehe

This whole thing reminded me of something I read here: the marketer Robert M. McMath calls this misbegotten tactic “selling ice cubes to cocker spaniels” - he brings up RJ Reynolds’ botched creation of smokeless cigarettes in a misguided attempt to appease nonsmokers who can’t stand cigarette smoke.
“[Cigarette companies] have spent an awful lot of money developing and trying to market cigarettes that would be less offensive to nonsmokers. This has never made sense to me. Why create a product for a consumer who wants absolutely nothing to do with you?”
Seems like Mr. Dolor has to answer that question first, but I’m not sure he has an easy answer for that.

Publishers of girlie mags should stop being so apologetic and should instead take the cue from Larry Flynt — free expression means people have to live with what they find offensive UNLESS there is a case for libel or slander.
What’s so shitty is this pagmamalinis. Hubad kung hubad — why pretend it’s anything else?

Sassy that’s why on the issue of what is the bottom line of it all has already been defined by Larry Flynt who is in many ways my libertarian - if not pornographic, father. On the other hand, a local edition of Playboy would still be just the thing for all mama mary pimp my car and daughter pinoys who’ve never quite gotten past their first centerfold. I prefer nude where light and shadows plays in hiding certain parts of a naked body. It let the viewer participate by imagining or fantasizing what is being concealed. That to me is “tasteful nudity”, whether it’s hanged in a museum or printed in a girlie mag.

I was in the Philippines when the “exciting breaking news” was flashed on TV. They made it sound like it was the most awaited moment of the town. I was just thinking to myself, good Lord, what are these people thinking?! Prior to that the news about the price of rice has doubled and a coverage on the organ black market. Amidst the glaring problem that so many Filipinos are living in poverty to the point that they can’t afford to buy the staple food and they have to sell their kidneys– here are people getting so excited that finally Playboy Magazine Philippines is here! As if day time prime time Philippine TV doesn’t have enough show of skin by gyrating background dancers.
Sure we have to celebrate the beauty of a woman but why make sexy nudity become so accessible to the young Filipinos? Ah well, I remember the time when seeing a Playboy magazine was like loosing one’s virginity.

Ms. Sassy naman, artistic photography or not, hubot hubad pa rin yun.
Playboy once featured Joan Collins in the nude. The photos are in black and white and they did the technique I mentioned earlier. The result was great and erotic. She was pass her 60’s when the photos were taken.
On the other hand, dapat lang para mapagtakpan ang mga kulubot ni Joan Collins.

AND THAT GOES FOR YOU TOO, BUGZ. If you think that getting excited in such a cheap way means being an adult, my condolences to you.
KK, it’s the result of hype. Publicists, marketers, advertisers and even bloggers whose god is money. LOL
BlogusVox, artistic photography makes public nudity less offensive to the sensibilities because it becomes a study of form, lights and shadows. In the same manner that nude visual art (paintings, sculpture) is a celebration of the beauty and uniqueness of the human body.
Nudity made for the sake of eliciting libido exhibits none of those.

“artistic photography makes public nudity less offensive to the sensibilities because it becomes a study of form, lights and shadows. In the same manner that nude visual art (paintings, sculpture) is a celebration of the beauty and uniqueness of the human body.”
There is a very thin line which separate artistic nude from porn. For the “schooled” this is clearly marked, but for the general populace the division is blurred.
Try to exhibit Michelangelo’s David if front of Quiapo Cathedral and observe who would react negatively. The priests? The “matronas”? Our Ladies of what-ever-color? It happened before in first world countries (whom we consider educated and tolerant), how much more in conservative and religious Philippines.

hey connie. i’ve been checking the “rose” blog. it’s so funny that she has a whole paragraph praising the sales and quality of Playboy… when ALL of my male friends regret even purchasing it. at almost P200… it is by far the worst magazine i have seen. even Playhouse (oh god another lousy magazine that is soooo sipsip to gokongwei) will probably make more money. “Rose” quoted that people are even offering to pay double or triple the cover price. umm… i wouldn’t even bother buying this piece of crap. i have several friends who are contributors (not you “rose) and even they are disgusted with the results. they were laughing at the Priscilla shots (the bad ones).
layouting bad. photographs bad. it’s like a bad UNO magazine for really, really old guys. except for the second photog who shot Priscilla. to the first guy who shot Priscilla… i’m sorry… but you should stop pretending. printing bad… the fashion pics were too dark… i could hardly make out what the clothes were.
and please… the cover! what the hell?! it looks like an issue of Yummy or Food magazine. another instance that newspaper men like Beting Dolor are not visual men. sure they can write… but conceptualize a shoot and supervise the layouting? Mr. Dolor has neither the skill and the patience to do these. he probably has to be back in the nursing home by 6:00 p.m. And please, have you seen Beting Dolor? i mean come on! he is the exact oppposite of cool. at least Hugh was cool and suave. Dolor is just a sad old man struggling to make it in an industry that he cannot even comprehend.
Playboy Philippines, if you want to make it even to 2009… please get rid of Mr. Dolor and hire people who know how to run a magazine. You guys are wasting an international title and just simply making a halo-halo magazine. inside news is the financier just wants to have the mag so he can purchase the rights to the Playboy Casino (which i would actually want to see happen). but for the love of god! at least give the magazine the quality it deserves! it is beyond tacky! it is lousy!

LOL would you consider the photo of a mother breastfeeding a child pornography? What about the nude body of a dead person?
What separates porn from non-porn is the intention which is projected in 1) the presentation (where artistry and non-artistry come in) and 2) the venue of exhibition.

With fiercest porn competition online, playboy success as the leading nude girl magazine in the world is phenomenal for its 55 years. Its rival Penthouse magazine went bankrupt.
The secret recipe is its famous choices for nude materials and stories (both fiction or fact) to bring out the subject into mens fantasy world. The founder Hugh Hefner knew exactly his market. Men are not willing to pay money not just on any nude girl. Hugh Hefner took out $8,000 loan to start Playboy in 1953 and paid $500 on nude picture rights of Marilyn Monroe. Same formula that drove Filipinos to buy the 1982 issue featuring a UST architecture student and 1979 Mutya ng Pilipinas runner-up Techie Agbayani.
Narcissistic voyeurism of famous subjects is a commodity that Playboy will continue to exploit. With homegrown star-struck crowd combined with Philippine double standards and cosmetic Catholic tradition, the Philippine version may very well prove profitable in the future.

well… the Philippine edition may not last the year. inside news is, the financier is desperately trying to find partners to support the magazine. he only has around 10 million, which in the magazine industry will only last at the most 6 months. with production costs, and all the leeches clinging to him… the financier will definitely need to find other people to help finance Playboy Philippines. or hit it big with the ad pages. i’m not quite sure how many of the ad pages in their first issue are paid or free. they have around 24 ad pages. if they cost it well and clients actually pay… they could actually make it.
anyway… only time will tell…

Villar knowing where his bread is buttered argues that what now seems to be randomly zoned housing projects aren’t contributing to the rice shortage. He didn’t seem to elaborate on his argument but stated;” That as there is a rice shortage so too is there a housing shortage and the solution to these shortages should be done simultaneously”. Is the senator suggesting that they go ahead and build house in places that were once rice fields and have the owners of those houses plant rice on their roofs. I didn’t thought the senator was that GREEN MINDED.

Nakakarindi na nga talaga nangyayari sa society natin ‘no? And with the proliferation of those girly magazines, i don’t know… I used to buy those nung college ako, then I realized it’s a total waste of money. Binenta ko na lang dun sa recto sa bumibili ng 2nd hand mags. Yung iba pinang-siga ko na lang.
Yung mga nagjujustify nung mag na yun should really get their heads checked. Kaya ang daming “feeling-classy-actually-jologs” pokpok at mga brusko-pink-jocks sa society natin ngayon. Glorified ang mga PORMANG POKPOK at ASAL POKPOK (hello, gretchen.) Sobrag daming kaululan ang nauuso ngayon. so far i’ve observed that it’s being sold in Magnet. it can’t be sold in the normal places like National Bookstore because they are very strict about what sells in their stands. it’s a long process. i doubt if Mini-stop will sell it coz it’s Gokongwei owned. i have not yet checked out powerbooks or fully booked. there’s a good chance that it might be there.
me pessimistic? i think the correct term you are looking for is realistic.
i’ve shown the mag to ALL my male friends… their average reaction… “Fuck! Ang panget!”
i’ve shown this magazine to photographers… they are all disgusted. “Cover pa lang panget na!”
bottom line is Tom, Playboy Philippines has promised something great… but have ended up giving a lousy, last-minute, worse-than-a-highschool-project magazine.

I had a chance to browse an FHM magazine during my search, kaawaawang bata. They had this lady wear a two piece yellow bikini with high heel black shoes. She looked like she was straggling to do the poses the photographer probably thought was sexy. Like you said, “ang panget!” Walang libog!
From your critics, parang may possibility na mag-freelance for the magazine. Considering how convenient it is now to take photographs, isang card lang you could take about 200 photos. Unlike back then where you had to load the camera with a roll of film, take 24 shots, unload the camera, making sure you do it right cause you could ruin the film if exposed to sunlight.
Man! what could start of as a photo session could easily ended up being a fucking session.

Also the current editor in chief, Beting Dolor will “resign” soon. Supposedly he won’t last beyond June or July of 2008.
