Marketing political candidates and the election

by Connie Veneracion on October 9, 2008

Okay, I need a laugh again so we’re switching to politics.

I’ve written so many times before that political campaigns are marketing strategies and that candidates are the products who are carefully packaged to capture the voters’ attention. You know, sometimes, it’s all packaging and nothing more like in her case. Her — the trophy running mate.

And, sometimes, the product and the packaging are used in a reverse psychology kind of way. Remember when, in April, Barack Obama arrived — hungry — at a diner, the media swarmed all over him and he said, “Why can’t I just eat my waffle?” About three weeks ago, two “freelance writers” (I don’t even know what that means anymore) came up with Obama Waffles and sold them, ironically, at the Value Voters Summit in Washington until the organizers booted them out. End of irony. And as though the makers want to impart the message that they are not targeting Obama, on their new website, they sell Sarah’s Mooseburger Helper too.

You can Google “Obama waffles” if you want to read about it including the alleged racism, etcetera. I read about it on the day the news hit the headlines but never considered writing about it until I came upon another Obama product.

Try this. Barack Obama footwear. The photo caption says, “A guest wears footwear decorated with a Barack Obama theme at Belmont University before the presidential debate in Nashville, Tennessee October 7, 2008.” So, it might not even be something for sale to the public but it’s so damn effective that it captured media attention.

Footwear and waffles. Taken together, they are funny in a sick way.

Now, how about this very Hollywood campaign video to get Americans to register and vote? It starts with celebrities telling people NOT TO VOTE then they go on to say “…unless…” you care about issues like global warming, health care, education…

That last link points to an entry in a blog in the L.A. Times. Do read the comments. The one thing that makes sense is the one by “Barney”: Exactly how do people vote on any of these issues, are they on the ballot? I much prefer the drug PSAs where the same people tell you not to use them and the go back to their trailers and get high.

Everything in life involves politics…better to master it than hate it.

Friensdship Ben, my apology, hindi pa kita mabalikan. Pero pag binlikan kita, matutuwa ka. Tyak sabog ihe ka (meaning sobra saya). Today is Friday and it is my TGIF. Tipsy or bato ako pag uwi ng bahay.

But how about this. I would say that Obama and Biden are incorrigible liars and McCain and Palin are not.

Would you, if you can vote in the US, still vote for Obama and Biden tandem? (Given is Obama is a Chicago thug).

Or would you rather not vote? (That is an option).

Ha ha ha. I’m a troll now aside from being a grossly bias, mean, and hypocrite comment poster.

But I will not be confused with facts and I don’t have my mind made up already.

man, i dont know if its on TV but I always hear on the car radio Jejomar advertising Makati as if its the biggest thing on the country right now. I thought that commercial is utterly a waste of air time, I really don’t see what genuine purpose it serves for. Obviously there are other wannabe’s doing their own marketing gimmick in a different kind of way. But MAN, unless it turned out to be really funny (or very rarely - genuinely inspiring), political marketing is sometimes one of the most annoying thing a citizen could be subjected to.

Trosp, “Or would you rather not vote?”

Now that is the SMARTEST option ever. Been advocating it since 1992.

bariotic, Binay is gunning for the presidency in 2010. Doesn’t matter to him whether the ads make sense. It’s just the constant exposure he’s after. You know, for people to remember his name.

fortuitous faery, no sanitary napkins with their faces? HAHAHAHAHA

Tom, sige basta I can return the favor and tickle you — with a knife. HAHAHAHAHAHA

“Tom, sige basta I can return the favor and tickle you — with a knife. HAHAHAHAHAHA”

Jeez, sadista ka yata.

Tom 10.12.08 at 2:17 am

Anong knife? Yung bang cleaver na gamit mo sa kitchen mo? HAHAHAHAHA
If so, could pieces of me later claim that any laughter I did was done under duress? HAHAHAHAHAHA
re. “Now that is the SMARTEST option ever. Been advocating it since 1992.” Really! I haven’t voted for any of these guys for a long long time. Last time I could remember voting was when I was filling up my absentee ballot for Carter while vacationing in the Philippines.
With the information we are getting from the 24/7 newscasts, it should be clear that these two- Obama or McCain - could not be president. The one I feel should be president would be Ralph Nader because he is going to throw this bum (Bush) and his cohorts in jail. That one act alone would regain for Americans the respect and admiration of the people of the world. But, what do I know? I probably am one of those humans left amongst these automatons.

Obama would always like to be called as “The One”. Never ever call him “That One”.

Pasensya na Ben, di ko na makita yung gusto ko sanang i-post.

Hi connie, If you would also notice the marketing strategy of Sen. Villar last quarter has a brand recall later on his presidential campaign. Of all Filipino Sports he sponsored the 9 Ball billiard tournament. Where Efren Bata and other prominent Filipino Billiard Players joined. The filipino term for Billiards is “Billyar” and in every barangay in the Philippines you would notice a Billyaran. I wont be surprise if on 2010 Efren Bata will endorse Manny Villar and say “Billyar Tayo” in one of the his commercial ads.

Connie Veneracion 10.14.08 at 7:12 am

Tom, no, the long narrow carving knife is more like it.

Trosp, the Wachowski brothers will feel insulted, ano ba!

Richard, wow, that is quite an analysis. Effective although of course (as is with most campaigns) it doesn’t really say anything about whether he is fit for the job or not. But then the majority of voters do not really care about that.

Efren Bata will cost him but he can afford it.
