Let’s start with Sarah Palin. Not that I care about the U.S. elections. I just needed a laugh on a Monday morning.
Here’s a video of Sarah Palin’s interview with Katie Couric on CBS. And it really is Sarah Palin, not Tina Fey.
I got the link from Dooce and if you’re going to click the link, I hope you read through some of the comments. I particularly like comment #41 by Leah, a freelance journalist, who says, “I don’t think the ability to form coherent thoughts is even a factor in US elections anymore.”
And if you want to get more disillusioned with politics and politicians, Wikipedia lists Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the 28th wealthiest head of state by net worth, with her net worth valued at US$1.3 million. Is that inherited money? Her father was born to a poor family and nothing in his career life suggests how he could have made a fortune. Yet, we all know that Gloria was born to an affluent family. I’m trying to find information on the family background of her mother; perhaps, that’s where the wealth comes from. Can’t find any. Meanwhile, I am left with the impression that the Presidency is lucrative indeed — for any President.
The President of Equatorial Guinea is on the list too but then the discovery of oil reserves in 1996 has removed Equatorial Guinea from the Third World category. The only other Third World head of state in the list is Swaziland’s King Mswati III. The shopping spree of his 13 (out of 14) wives in Europe and the Middle East, complete with chartered jet, was the object of a protest march by Swazi women last month.
Further reading on Swaziland led to an article on Kleptocracy, defined as “a government that extends the personal wealth and political power of government officials and the ruling class (collectively, kleptocrats) at the expense of the population.”
What started as a laugh is now turning into a depression. I think I’ll stop my online reading for the day.

Hi Ms. Connie,
I’m an avid reader of your blog ever since I discovered it while searching recipes online.
At first, I thought your site is only for recipes/cooking, I didn’t know that I am missing a lot. The reason why I missed a lot on your web site is because we don’t usually maximize the websites we are reading at work (lol).
I know this is not the right place to send my e-mail but I can’t find your exact e-mail address. Is it sassy.laywer@gmail.com?
I’m a working mom and ever since I read your blog about baby milk formula, I already wanted to e-mail and ask you to please give more ideas and suggestions on what we can prepare for our todlers. It’s a pain in the b___ to buy those expensive milk formula, plus we don’t know what are the brands of milk that are safe and not nowadays. If you could also provide additional information regarding Chinal milk scare, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Ms. Connie.
Sincerely,
Lhyn

I still read Wikipedia even though many considered it as an unreliable source of information. I consider it as a good starting point in gathering facts (just like factcheck.org).
One of its biggest setback is everybody can edit any item in Wiki. Consider the below -
ACLU Wikipedia Edits
Originating IP: 12.42.243.10
Date: 19 APR 2005 (19:29)
Article: Pope Benedict XVI
Added the words, “…such as molesting young boys and degrading women.â€
Total Sentence: “Benedict was considered to be Pope John Paul II’s “right hand man†and also one of his closest friends, and during the Pope’s final illness, he carried out many of the Pope’s functions as leader of the Catholic Church, such as molesting young boys and degrading women.â€
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pope_Benedict_XVI&oldid=12530341
The original sentence:”Benedict was considered to be Pope John Paul II’s “right hand man†and also one of his closest friends, and during the Pope’s final illness, he carried out many of the Pope’s functions as leader of the Catholic Church.”
A lot more -

Lhyn, yes, that’s my e-mail. There’s an entry on Sanlu milk last week. Probably another for Thursday’s column.
Trosp, cross-checking is always the best policy. But some things are too controversial not to raise hackles. And, for whatever it’s worth, Wikipedia provides footnotes which newspapers and most other publications do not.

I just wasted 1 minute and 28 seconds of my time watching that video. Can I have a refund?
Regarding the comment you mentioned:
“I don’t think the ability to form coherent thoughts is even a factor in US elections anymore.â€
Couldn’t agree more. Actually, its already been proven in the last two US national elections.
Tom 09.29.08 at 11:44 pm
I don’t see anything wrong with Palin’s responses. In fact, I’m made to realize just what circumstances the people of Alaska experience considering the geographical location of their state. As far as Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is concern in terms of the wealth stated, looks like she could easily be the DH of the group.
Connie Veneracion 09.30.08 at 7:12 am
Jaypee, if you’re able to get a refund, lemme know, ha, I’d like one too LOL
Tom, re “I don’t see anything wrong with Palin’s responses.”
Pity.

Talaga, Connie? What is so pitiful and missed point? It might just whip up some laughter on this rather depressing Monday night.

Hi Sass,
As mentioned in your post -
“I don’t think the ability to form coherent thoughts is even a factor in US elections anymore.â€
I’m 100% in agreement. But this one is applicable to both Democrat and Republican candidates?
From Obama, and this one was not a gotcha - US now has 57 states!

on GMA’s wealth…wow! i know mike arroyo is old money but $1.3 million for GMA alone?? astounding! you’re probably right, the presidency is a lucrative position—well, kahit barangay captain lang, lucrative talaga if you’re corrupt.

I was watching on Youtube a segment of Couric’s interview with McCain AND Palin together where Couric asked Palin about Pakistan again, I was in stitches simply observing McCain’s reaction - if he had a blanket he would have hidden under it. I just found today an ” title=”">article about this in Huffington Post too.
Pedestrian Observer GB 10.01.08 at 2:25 am
This is American Idol’s fault….. they have lowered American standards thus we are subjected to cruel jokes that is a heartbeat away from leading the powerful (ok, maybe not anymore at the rate the market crashes, lol) US of A.
I say let Palin step down in favor of………. TINA FEY, she is one comedian that is genuinely funny after all the lines are too blurred to distinguish a comedian from a politician.
Trosp 10.01.08 at 8:43 am
In the continuing saga of US politicians ability to form coherent thoughts, let’s also have these from Democrats Vice Pres candidate Biden -
“When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, ‘Look, here’s what happened,”‘ Barack Obama’s running mate recently told the “CBS Evening News.”
Except, Republican Herbert Hoover was in office when the stock market crashed in October 1929. There also was no television at the time; TV wasn’t introduced to the public until a decade later, at the 1939 World’s Fair.
http://tinyurl.com/4g2pm4
And another one:
Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden made an embarrassing remark during a campaign appearance in Columbia, Mo., on Tuesday.
Standing before a large gathering, Biden tried to give special recognition to State Senator Chuck Graham by shouting out to him: “Chuck, stand up, let the people see you.â€
It was only then that Biden realized Graham is confined to a wheelchair. But he recovered quickly and told the crowd to “stand up for Chuck.†The crowd responded with a rousing cheer for Graham.
(That was from an experienced candidate).

Ang daya mo. For Pres. Arroyo’s 1.3 million dollar net worth, I commend her for that. In fact she is 1.1million dollar short according to the actuarial studies of insurance companies that state; “For the baby boomers to maintain the standard of living they are accustomed to having, they should have at least 2.4 million dollars in their retirement accounts by the time they start drawing from it.” Besides, with the trillions of dollars being lost lately, what is 1.3 million? Nickels and dimes.
Dexie 10.01.08 at 9:31 am
Tina Fey “spoofed” the interview on SNL again except this time, she didn’t have to change a thing. Exactly like that.. I’m sure YouTube has it
Connie Veneracion 10.01.08 at 10:03 am
Hey, Tom, she is far from retired and she can still go over the minimum set by those actuarial studies.
Tom 10.01.08 at 12:01 pm
Indeed, and her money-making days will begin when her term as president ends. She has stated that in 10 years time the Philippines will be a first world country. With all the connections she has established all over the world during her presidency, she could easily be making millions just attempting to fulfill that goal.
Connie Veneracion 10.01.08 at 12:11 pm
Tom, re “the Philippines will be a first world country”…
It doesn’t follow that what millions or billions politicians accumulate, legitimately or otherwise, trickles down to the grassroots economy. Marcos was once higher up on the list of the world’s wealthiest heads of state and look where it brought us.
Tom 10.01.08 at 10:12 pm
The idea that something should trickle down to us in my opinion is sadomasochistic. You’ve cited an example. How about what is currently happening with the financial markets, aren’t these the Bush tax cuts on the rich with the hope that it trickles down to the common man? Looks like what will trickle down to the people would be a $700 billion bailout on the rich. How did this kind of relationship between people got started? Was it from a person with such an ego (king) associating with another person so insecure (slave)?

Just like I’ve mentioned in my previous comment, let’s google for Obama and Palin’s gaffes with the media. One caveat, I want to be grossly bias, mean, and hypocrite. Meaning I’ve read only the conservative blogs/reports like Newsbusters, Right Wing Nut House, American Thinker, Ace of Spade and have disregarded the liberal blogs/reports like Huffington, DU, and Kos.
The gaffes (or lies) of the Messiah, The One, The Only, the I AM! of American politics (and don’t forget the man who can and who will but who have never been a “was”):
1.) Obama Says The U.S. Senate Banking Committee Is “My Committee.” Obama: “Just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, which is my committee, a bill…” (Obama Press Conference, Sderot, Israel, July 23, 2008)
Obama Is Not A Member Of The U.S. Senate Committee On Banking, Housing, And Urban Affairs. (U.S. Senate Committee On Banking, Housing, And Urban Affairs Website, Accessed 7/23/08)
2.) On May 13, Obama Mistakenly Said That Arabic Translators Deployed To Iraq Were Needed In Afghanistan, WHEN AFGHANS DON’T EVEN SPEAK ARABIC (They Speak Other Languages Including Pashtu, Dari, And Farsi) And Those Fighters That Do Are Shooting At Our Troops, Not Talking To Them.
3.) In March 2008, Obama Falsely Claimed He Won The Michigan Democrat Primary When He Was Not On The Ballot
Obama Claimed He “Won Michigan.” NBC’s David Gregory: “But Senator, you have not demonstrated that you can decisively put the nomination away. You have also not demonstrated that you can win some of the big states that’ll be important in the general election — California, New York, Ohio.” Obama: “Well, David, we’ve won Michigan and Georgia and Illinois and Missouri.” (NBC’s, “Today Show,” 3/5/08)
But Sen. Clinton Won The Michigan Primary. “Hillary Clinton won a largely uncontested Michigan Democratic primary Tuesday.” (”Clinton Wins Largely Uncontested Michigan Primary,” The Boston Globe, 1/15/08)
And Obama Did Not Participate. “Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary on Jan. 15 is a contest in name only, with just one major candidate — Hillary Clinton — on the ballot. … Edwards, Barack Obama and Bill Richardson decided not to participate in Michigan’s primary because the state Democratic Party’s decision to hold a primary before Feb. 5 violates national party rules.” (Chris Christoff, “Voters: ‘It’s Like We Don’t Count,’” Detroit Free Press, 1/7/08)
4.) Obama Mistakenly Complained U.S. Was Sending Agricultural Aid To Iraq That Otherwise Would Go To Afghanistan. “No sooner did Obama realize his mistake — and correct himself — but he immediately made another. ‘We need agricultural specialists in Afghanistan, people who can help them develop other crops than heroin poppies, because the drug trade in Afghanistan is what is driving and financing these terrorist networks. So we need agricultural specialists,’ he said.
So far, so good. ‘But if we are sending them to Baghdad, they’re not in Afghanistan,’ Obama said. Iraq has many problems, but encouraging farmers to grow food instead of opium poppies isn’t one of them. In Iraq, oil fields not poppy fields are a major source of U.S. technical assistance.” (David Wright and Sunlen Miller, “Obama Gaffes On Iraq And Afghanistan,” ABC News, 5/13/08)
5.) In May 2008, Obama Claimed His Uncle Helped Liberate Auschwitz:
Obama: “I had an uncle who was one of the — who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps. And the story in our family was is that when he came home, he just went up into the attic and he didn’t leave the house for six months. Right, now, obviously, something had really affected him deeply. But at that time, there just weren’t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain.” (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks On Memorial Day, Las Cruces, N.M., 5/26/08)
According To The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Auschwitz Was Liberated By The Red Army On January 27, 1945. “On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp complex, where they discovered some 7,000 prisoners, including young children, who had not been evacuated by the SS.” (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Web Site, http://www.ushmm.org, Accessed 5/27/08)
6.) In June 2008, Obama WAS UNABLE TO COMPLETE A SENTENCE:
Obama: “What they’ll say is, well it will cost too much money. It would cost about, it it it would cost about the same as what we would spend … it … o-over the course of ten years it would cost what it would cost us…it it. Alright, okay, we’re going to. It-it would cost us about the same as it would cost for about hold on one second I can’t hear myself. But I’m glad you’re fired up though. I’m glad…” (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks At A Campaign Event, Bristol, VA, 6/5/08)

I don’t see anything wrong with Sarah Palin’s responses either, and maybe it’s because I’ve seen some of Obama’s interviews and it was even worst. He couldn’t even make up his mind in some of his responses. He keep changing what he already said, maybe depending on where the wind blows? I think he tries to please everybody, Well, that’s politics as we know it. I read that what people like most about Sarah is that she has a lot of common sense. Will I be a feminist if I say… common sense and women (for the most part) are parallel?
Connie Veneracion 10.02.08 at 7:00 am

I wouldn’t call that feminism. I’d call it stereotyping.

Common sense and women are parallel? That would be a personal opinion, and nothing more. In my personal experience, I’ve met a lot of women with no common sense. Me (myself, not the commenter me) at times, included.

What is happening lately should be clear indication that these archaic institutions be done away with. Folks, we shouldn’t allow these second-rate auto salespeople to be running circles around us. Once elected you know who their real bosses are. It ain’t us, that’s for sure. Obama is rapidly and sadly becoming an Uncle Tom.
Regulations! Watch, it would be regulations on us,the people. Let me ask you this, would we be able to write off from our tax returns any losses we would incur in our retirement accounts? My quess is we won’t. If we want real change, again let me say, no more president, more congress, no more supreme court, and now no more wall street.

No amount of coaching, memorizing, rehearsing can hide the fact that this woman does not have the curiosity, knowledge and depth to grasp the serious issues facing the country (when asked by Katie Couric, she couldn’t even name one newspaper she supposedly reads). She sticks to her scripted speech, never mind if it doesn’t answer the question- it’s only a debate, right? Oh, those winks, colloquialisms, shout outs, ad nauseaum. Gosh darn it, you betcha we’re in a heap o’trouble if this woman gets elected.
When Biden choked up (not cry) as he talked about knowing how it is to be a single parent when he lost his wife and daughter in a car crash, leaving him with 2 critically injured sons unsure if they were gonna make it, that was not weakness-it was being human.
Miguk 10.06.08 at 1:12 pm
Yes, her outright refusal to answer the questions asked made this ‘debate’ a farce.
Biden was not doing that for effect. I felt it was genuine and sincere and he really could feel the pain of others in the same situation and have empathy because he had been there.

After I left Burger King almost twenty years ago, I lost all my $19,000 401K retirement money to the failed Saving & Loan Asses. Thanks to McCain and his friend Charles Keating. Please read below.
In that debate, even though Palin did not have the Washintonesque glib, she has exposed Biden to add 23 or more gaffes/lies to his accumulating list of lies. In this same post, I’ve commented on how stupid Biden is-
“When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, ‘Look, here’s what happened,â€â€˜ Barack Obama’s running mate recently told the “CBS Evening News.
Except, Republican Herbert Hoover was in office when the stock market crashed in October 1929. There also was no television at the time; TV wasn’t introduced to the public until a decade later, at the 1939 World’s Fair.â€
Take two on Biden on his debate with Palin -
“BIDEN: Look, all you have to do is go down Union Street with me in Wilmington [and] go to Katie’s Restaurant or walk into Home Depot with me.â€
WHILE THERE WAS A KATIE’S IN WILMINGTON, IT HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS IT ALSO WAS NOT ON UNION STREET. “
Would you vote for that person?
Ha ha. Biden, as an experienced politician, the Washingtonesque glib, can always twist the fact and LIE WITH ELEGANCE.
For Palin, as one US conservative blogger has commented-
“A bad answer not because it’s so awkward but because she lacks the knack for spinning tough questions to her advantage in a way politicians ought to be able to.â€
What are her lies Jojo?
I can understand that there are lots of justifications of not voting for McCain-Palin pair. Possibly, if I really have a deep understanding of US politics, I would do the same.
What I cannot understand is since you will not vote for them, then, it is justifiable to vote for Obama-Biden pair.
Barack Hussein Obama is exposed for what he is. The man who up to now has not produced an authenticated birth certificate, twisting the information in his academic records, and his performance as a senator. All that we can confirm is he is a community organizer (make it sure to google what is a community organizer in US is).
All his excuses are those are DISTRACTIONS from the main issue (he can’t even understand what are those main issues are). Everything are distractions if he can’t make any explanation.
From the web-
“Barack Obama’s supporters claim that he can be all things to all people if they simply believe. There is a word for that. Barack Obama is running as a placebo. He is a sugar pill wrapped in a bit of bitter to give it some authenticity, but he’s not real medicine. He’s never cured anything, and makes some conditions far more dire.â€
It’s cool to vote for Obama, The Messiah, The One, The Only, the I AM! of American politics (but never a man who “wasâ€) the first black president of US of America according to some or to many.
Ha ha ha…
BTW for leftard Couric in a friendly impromptu interview with TMZ –
TMZ has posted video of a friendly impromptu interview with Katie Couric on the streets of New York, where Couric suggested her interview with Sarah Palin was really fair and that Palin had lied like everyone else when she says she reads the British news mag The Economist. The TMZ man asked Couric how she felt about Palin complaining about her: “I feel we did a really fair job and gave her a lot of opportunities.”
He then asked “What magazines and newspapers do you read?” Couric gave a political answer: “All of them and any of them.” The interviewer said: “Can you name one?” She kept smiling and said, “Of course, everyone lies about The Economist, but I actually read it. And I read a lot of magazines and newspapers. LUCKILY, I’M NOT RUNNING FOR VICE PRESIDENT.”
What an asshole…

Sometimes, I can say that deep in me, aside from sometimes having the desire of being grossly bias, mean, and hypocrite, I also would like be a conspiracy theorist.
For quite some time, I’m harboring the thought that Barack Hussein Obama was supposed to be not the Dems official candidate. Hillary was very strong and have lose only on the super delegate votes.
But the Dems was twice routed in the presidential election and would not like to take a chance of being humiliated again. If they lose for the third time, they will claim- “that’s why we have Obama.†(Maybe they are reserving Hillary on the next presidential election).
It reminds me of the Italian politics where an opposition party fielded a porno star as one of their candidates in the parliamentary. And she won.
She is Cicciolina (google her).
And some similarity with Barack Obama Hussein -
“While in office, CICCIOLINA SUPPORTED SEX EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS and, not surprisingly, “Love for all!” as she proclaimed. She also stood for protecting the environment, stopping nuclear proliferation and defending animal rights. On two occasions, Cicciolina is reported to have attempted to end the buildup to the Gulf War by offering her own body. “I am available to make love to Saddam Hussein to achieve peace in the Middle East,” she said.â€
Additional (take note of the idea of “change”)-
“Historically, Italian women have held only 10 percent of total parliament seats and were not allowed full political participation until after World War II. As one of the few women in parliament, Cicciolina’s victory was significant. Furthermore, she was unafraid to chastise the male parliament members, calling attention to a political system that forbade new faces: “The rules of government change,” she said, “but your faces always remain the same … and the bigger issue is that our problems are always the same, but you just pretend nothing is wrong and continue asking for votes and continue to make your governments fall only to revive them again. The years go by, but your faces remain.”
Ha ha ha…

Trosp,
I didn’t know much about investments then, much less about stocks. So when I rolled over my 401k thru one the brokerage companies, one of my associates at work suggested that I buy stocks that are down such as Savings & Loan Banks, which I did, thinking that Banks are safe. I was not smart enough, I did not monitor my investments. I should have sold them when they kept on going down. That was a very expensive lesson for me.

And for those who have voted for Barack Hussein Obama in the primaries, why did you vote him? He was not properly vetted (I could be wrong on this but I’ll still ask the question why.
- They did not know what a community organizer is nor they did not know of ACORN.
- They did not know the racist black evangelist Wright, inland terrorist Ayers and company, Rezko the corruptor. And even his wife!
He ’s supposed to be arrested and tried for treason!

JMONREAL-
No wonder. You are still lucky. If you still have more, I’d just close my eyes.

Trosp,
My choice was Hillary. My wife, our 3 voting age children, and I are more concerned about the present and the future economy, health care and retirement income. I might have to work for 10 more years now before I retire, instead of 5 years. My gut feeling is Obama/Biden team will win this election. In that case, I will be able to retire in 8 or 7 years.
Miguk 10.09.08 at 8:23 am
Good luck trying to retire. Obama is going to get the mess and the blame for Bush giving a trillion dollars so his buddies could have no-bid contracts in Iraq, and another trillion and counting to bail out his buddies on Wall Street. No matter what he tries to do, he is already screwed before he even gets in office.

JMonreal,
I think Hillary would be a better candidate than BHO. A true American. Just like what I’ve commented earlier in this post, it seems to me the Dems would not like to take a chance. Hillary won in the direct votes but lost in super delegates votes (just like Bush in the last US presidential election). Bush might perform some magic.
Possibly, no matter what the outcome of this US presidential election, it could be a Palin vs Hillary on the next presidential.
I’m retired already (early retirement option). I share your concern. I still have two young kids (one 1st year HS and the younger one a grade 5).
ROFL…Miguk, you are already making an excuse available for Obama for his inevitable failure if he’s elected. Obama is a failure in the making. Just read his speeches and campaign spins. A Chicago thug.
They’ll vote for him because he’s black and McCain is Bush. According to the Big Media (conservatives don’t call them Old Media anymore), you’re a racist if you don’t vote for Obama, The man for a change (he is clueless on what is to be changed). The man who CAN and who WILL but who has never been a “WAS”. Zero accomplishment except for his community organizing..
You have commented- “Obama is going to get the mess and the blame for Bush giving a trillion dollars so his buddies could have no-bid contracts in Iraq, and another trillion and counting to bail out his buddies on Wall Street.”
That was debunked already. They have thrown everything including the toilet bowl to MaCain but I’ve never heard this one being mentioned even in passing in Obama’s election campaign.
Perhaps you have a new information on that one. Care to share that with us?
