Internet-less days

I wish it were easy posting an entry using a touch pad no larger than a credit card but it isn’t. Imagine what hell it was typing last thursday’s and tomorrow’s column using my iPhone. But that’s life. Pldt DSL service is still dead and resurrection is taking longer than smoothing out the wrinkles on a faded starlet’s face.

Thank you for the mother’s day e-cards and greetings posted through the comment box. I return the greetings and wish that you and yours spent yesterday better than I did worrying about meeting deadlines sans Internet.

I hear that “The birds of prey and batjay” has generated some controversy on blogs and off. Debate is great, glad I sparked something, but as always people need to be reminded to separate that issue from the personalities. That is what separates the men from the boys, and the worthy opinions from nonsense.

I am able to check mails, replying is not always easy and I can’t view attachments most of the time. For those who emailed interview questions, if my tardy replies mess your deadlines with your publications, you can sue pldt. I will applaud and mine will be the most resounding.

I ask that you bear with me; it isn’t such a huge burden as the one I carry not knowing when shitty pldt will finally be able to act more responsibly and in a timely fashion too. Setting firecrackers up their asses has crossed my mind.

Well said!! How about planting land mines in their bowls of oatmeal? That would be a hoot :)

Guess what..I’ve been cursed too. Damn PLDT!!

    Nga pala..HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY :D

    happy mother’s day :)

  4. Hay, internet talaga. Tsk tsk tsk. PLDT pa! I sometimes feel crippled without the net… which is both a sad situation and a bit of a sad life. Hahaha.

  5. I wrote about my feelings about pldt and its customer service in today’s column. This morning’s conversations with customer service was another round of disaster. Am tempted to get smart bro mobile but 4500 pesos for the prepaid kit is a bit too much.

Speaking of Internet, my wife told me that their Smart Bro connection in Tagaytay has been suddenly reduced from 100 to 10MBPS. Hindi pa yun yung wireless internet ha. A friend from Silang Cavite also had the same experience. I’m not sure whether there was a notice that they just missed o nag-iilusyon lang kami na 100 talaga ang connection dati.

susbsidiary lang naman ng pldt ang smart. baka maging same kind of service din sila. although syempre, i cant speak for smart as i’m currently a PLDT DSL susbcriber. *sigh*

It must really be hellish typing your newspaper columns using a cell phone! Hope you don’t get tendinitis.

P.S. Belated Happy Mother’s Day, Connie!

  9. Hey connie,
Whenever my ISP goes crazy, I use my phone as back up via Smart Bro. I did not get that prepaid kit. All I did was set up my phone PC suite, and use my phone as modem to connect to Smart Bro. It works well, speed is okay.

That is a great idea – setting firecrackers up their … That will surely wake them up and celebrate Independence Day early.

  11. Thanks, Jayred. Nagkaugat na yata kamay ko kaka-type sa cell phone. Grrrrr

Chateau, the iPhone doesn’t work as a modem eh.

Very strange comment from @kotsengkuba – I don’t think you will find any broadband ISP in the Philippines who can give you a “10mbps” or “100mbps” connection. You may have to move to Korea for that :)

Connie, the “3G phone as a modem” backup trick is tried and true (just make sure you use a Smart prepaid sim as Globe 3G is rather a dicey proposition nowadays if you want a steady connection). If your iPhone can’t be used as a modem, you might want to pick up a second hand LG or Nokia with 3G.

As to the usual statement that “a 3G phone is just as good as the Bro plug-it” canard – well that would only be true if the phone is an HSDPA device like the Bro USB modem. If you lug the modem around and connect in an area with a HSDPA signal – then you’d get around 1.5 mps.
Probably not too common place now, but Smart’s upgrading a lot of their base stations, so an HSDPA signal may be coming around your area sooner than you think.

The cheapest HSDPA phone I can think of is the Nokia 6120c – around 10 grand. The ZTE MF 622 modem used as the Smart Bro Plug It modem is still cheaper at P4,500 and has a maximum throughput of 7.2 mbps (of course you won’t get that speed in this country, but it’s nice to know the horsepower is under the hood, like driving a Ferrari in Quiapo.)

    Hi Connie,

Read your Manila Standard article about The Birds of Prey and Batjay. I think the poet you were referring to (with the dots and comma) was Abadilla — although I remember the poem that we took up was in Filipino so don’t know if you were referring to the same poem or poet.

Anyway, interesting article. As for the debates — well, each is entitled to his or her own opinion. I guess it is literature if something in the piece connects with the reader. Iba iba na siyempre yan.

  14. Angel, ah you should read how those who disagree are calling me names hahaha As usual, people can’t disagree and discuss on an issue level. Parating personalan.
