Sam made us promise that we’d go and see a movie after the UPCAT last Sunday. We promised but there was a problem about which movie to see. Alex had been waiting for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor ever since she read about the third Mummy film. The Dark Knight was Sam’s choice. I was more than willing to see either having enjoyed the two previous Mummy films and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.
Straight from lunch at Teriyaki Boy, we proceeded to the Eastwood City cinemas. The Mummy was showing in three out of four cinemas. But the last two screenings in Cinema 1 featured The Dark Knight. After much whining, Speedy said we would watch The Mummy first then The Dark Knight afterward. There would be a three hour lull between the two, Sam said we could just browse the shops and that really made me nervous because “browsing” with Sam can get very, very expensive, if you know what I mean. So, between The Mummy and The Dark Knight, the girls and I had our hair trimmed. Way, way cheaper than window (sic) shopping. What little waiting time was left was spent in pet shops.
Oh, but I’m moving forward in time much too fast. I should tell you first how I kept dozing off while watching The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. I don’t pay much attention to film reviews especially before I go and see a movie because I like watching movies with an open mind. In the case of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, I should have paid closer attention to critics’ and moviegoers’ reviews. Damn, it was bad. I love Jet Li but even Jet Li couldn’t save the movie for me. It was bad.
To start with, I don’t know where the mummy was in the film. The Dragon Emperor and his army were turned to stone, and they stayed that way for centuries, not because they were mummified but because of a spell (curse?) cast on them. The dialogs were bad, the humor that characterized the two previous Mummy films was lacking and, worse, the chemistry between the characters just wasn’t there.
I’ve seen Maria Bello before in Butterfly on a Wheel and she’s not a bad actress. But she was terribly miscast as the replacement for Rachel Weisz as Evelyn. She did not exude the casual sensuality and hilarious cluelessness of Rachel Weisz’s Evelyn. She appeared stiff, formal and so, so out of place. Even the antics of Evelyn’s brother, Jonathan, lost their bite. Only Michelle Yeoh made some impact.
The cinematography was terrible. I don’t understand why the director wanted the fight scenes zoomed in, losing much of the background and the mood. In fact, some shots were so closely zoomed in that heads were getting chopped off on the screen.
Then, there’s the presence of the Yeti. My goodness, my mouth fell open. Yeti?
The two previous Mummy films were by no means cinematic masterpieces but they were a lot of fun. I must have missed several minutes of the third Mummy because I dozed off at least six times but I could still follow the plot every time I woke up. Why? Because there was very little plot. Even if you only get to see the first and last 15 minutes of the film, you’d still manage to catch the teeny-weeny plot.
Poor Alex, she waited so long for the movie and she was probably more disappointed than I was.
What you don’t want to miss is The Dark Knight. Damn, Heath Ledger was great. Jack Nicholson was a fantastic, albeit cartoonish, Joker but you have to see Heath Ledger in this film. And, just as Batman Begins tried to humanize Batman, The Dark Knight tries to do the same thing for Joker and Two-Face. No spoilers. Just see it. ![]()

I feel exactly the same as you did when my son and I saw the Mummy this past Saturday. Man, what a letdown.. As soon as I found out that Rachel Weisz wasn’t playing the part of Evelyn, I wanted to walk out of the theater, but I didn’t, I stuck it out. Although, I did want my $9 back after the movie was over. Ho, Hum..

i didn’t really realize that it was maria bello until after i saw the opening credits! she just looked familiar but i couldn’t place her. the brunette hair certainly didn’t do her any service. i liked her ok in e.r., but next to rachel weisz she just looked dowdy

I’ve seen it, twice! And I loved every minute of it

Judy, I knew weeks earlier that Rachel Wiesz had been replaced and, sucker that I am, I still wanted to see it. Bad, bad decision.
rina, and who was that boytoy who played Alex? Never heard of him. He couldn’t act, goodness sakes.
Mae, really? Good for you. At least you didn’t feel like you wanted your money back.

Connie! Your photos are getting better and better. And baka you need to change your blog’s name to mansiononaridge. Hehehehehe. Tanda mo na, may anak kang nag-UPCAT.
Alam mo, we watched The Dark Knight. I slept through most of it. So while I’m certain Heath was great I could not follow the storyline. Will try to catch it again on DVD. When I’m not so tired.

I hate Jet Li. I hate his acting and his grunge voice. Though I admit i loved at least three movies starring Jet Li - 1. The Forbidden Kingdom which I still continuously watching from youku.com 2. That martial Arts movie which title I don’t know where he portrayed a true to life story of a legendary martials arts expert and 3. That Action Comedy with the theme song “Shi Shang Zhi You Mama Hao” which means “A mother is the most important person in the world”
Oh I love the recent The Warlords too though I haven’t yet watched it with English subtitles.
Regarding the Dark Knight, I read from somewhere that Joker is also Two Face. I hope when the movie is shown in Shanghai it will not be dubbed in Mandarin. hahaha

your post reminds me of the time i watched Indiana Jones, don’t know if it was the lateness of the hour (we watched the last full show) or simply because the movie was boring but i just kept nodding off. Didn’t enjoy it at all.

I thought it was ok — especially the young heroine and the general’s sidekick — what delightful eye candy!

Maria Bello is okay….she was good in “A History of Violence”. Still prefer Rachel Weisz though. I’ll just wait for the DVD. The Dark Knight was amazing! Heath Ledger’s performance was captivating and disturbing! It’ll be tough to find someone to play the Joker next time. Soundtrack is also good! I’d like to see it again!

The one star I plopped on this clunky bore-athon is due to the presence of the great Jet Li as the evil Dragon Emperor of the subtitle and the gorgeous Michelle Yeoh as Zi Yuan, a witch who’s been on the Emperor¹s ass for over 2000 years.

Toward the end of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh launch into a vigorous sword fight — and what a grand pleasure it is to watch these two world-class stars in action again…Their duel atop the Great Wall of China is a reunion of titans, an Old Timers’ Day for two actor-athletes still in their sinuous prime. Forgive the effusions of an alter-kocker fanboy, but the flinty glamour of Li and Yeoh — buttressed by the stolid, sneering presence of top Hong Kong villain Anthony Wong Chau-sang (who in 1993 appeared in 15 films!) — is the best reason to catch this third in the series of Indiana Jones knockoffs.

hi ma’am. i enjoy reading your blogs and can i add your site to my list entries? or is that what it’s called? hehe. i’m actually new to blogging so, i don’t know the technical names of stuff. sorry!
with regards to the two movies, my husband and I haven’t seen them yet and will most likely watch them once they come out on dvd. thanks for the input, though.
Connie Veneracion 08.05.08 at 10:25 pm
Sam, 2 hours and 40 minutes can be tedious. And I’m getting the DVD too when it comes out. I bet I’d be able to appreciate it 10 times better if I can watch it again and again. Some movies (like books) grow on you.
Kotsengkuba, re “I hate Jet Li.”
Hindi ka kasi babae hahaha Just read Miguk’s comment about Michelle Yeoh and Isabelle Leong. Same-same.
Re the URL — it’s an experiment of some sort?
Peterb, that crossed my mind too. With Heath Ledger dead, who would replace him. It might be another disappointment — as with Rachel Weisz’s replacement.
Kreez, even Indiana Jones was better than Mummy 3.
KL, the last segment of the film was, for me, the only part worth seeing. It was the only part that did not put me to sleep hehehe
Cheann, you mean a blogroll? Sure, and thanks.

“I should tell you first how I kept dozing off while watching The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor…”-Ms. Connie
In that case, maybe you can at least recommend it to people with insomnia

HAHAHAHA Nice one, Ormocanon! LOL

I saw The Dark Knight and though I’m not a Batman and Joker’s fanatic, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Heath’s performance was so remarkable. =)
auee 08.06.08 at 5:44 pm
Thanks for the review… Duda na nga ako sa Mummy even without reading the reviews, sealed na sya ngayon. We’ll see Wall-E instead then.
We’ve been to see the Dark Knight. I admit I didn’t have high hopes coz I thought the media & the casts were over-playing Ledger’s performance as he’s dead & all. I guess the best thing is to always come in with low expectation then the movie blows you away. That’s my Transformer experience & it’s always awesome to be proven wrong.
Nicholson’s Joker cannot be compared with that of Ledger’s. Their films’ themes are too different, and both men played their roles well.
I’m not sure how Nolan can outdo this second installment, if they are planning a third.
Miguk 08.07.08 at 9:49 am
…and they also needed to do some gratuitous nude scenes hahaha
Tito 08.07.08 at 2:24 pm
Thanks for the tip. This is the first time I visited your blog and you bet it will be part of my regular surfing habit. I saw Dark Knight and Heth Ledger was definitely excellent. Should win the oscar hands down. I was going to watch mummy 3 as the trailer was awesome but based on your review and comments. it should be rated awe-sama nalang. I’ll just hold on to my emergency entertainment fund for the next to die for movie.
