I want a Palm Centro

By Connie Veneracion on November 21, 2007

Speedy’s phones are company issued. Mine aren’t. I don’t have a company. I have ME. And all my business expenses, I have to pay for. As Speedy so pointedly pointed out recently (how’s that for alliteration), if I want a computer upgrade and a dSLR upgrade, I should pay for them because they are considered as business expenses. That’s why I had to pay for the new video cam too.

Whether or not Speedy will be issued a new phone is really beside the point. He can’t choose the model he wants anyway because all managers get the same kind. What he wants, what he had been salivating over for months, is the Sony Ericsson W960i.* It’s been over three months since he first read about it and it’s still “coming”.

Sony Ericsson K800i and M600i

Now, I’m a nice person. I have a beautiful Sony Ericsson M600i (Sam took the photo above — that’s why the focus is on her K800i) that’s every business executive’s wet dream. Well, those who value aesthetics anyway. It does most things that an expensive PDA can but it’s smaller, cheaper and much, much prettier. Speedy, on the other hand, had been living with his badly scratched ugly Nokia for I can’t remember how long. So, I said we could swap phones until we can get new ones. I made that offer months ago but he declined because, like I said, he was waiting for the release of the Sony Ericsson W960i.* Since no one really knows whether the “coming” will happen in a week or in a year, one day last week, he finally accepted my offer with reservations, I must say, because he is partial to dark-colored phones.

Our intention, of course, is to go with our usual modus operandi — when both phones are available, we will trade in our old cell phones for new ones. It’s cheaper that way. My plan was to get the P1i and it has been available for a couple of months, but I am willing to wait so we can buy new phones at the same time. You know, like maybe I won’t have to pay for anything at all. Baka pwedeng lubusin na n’ya tutal s’ya naman nagbabayad ng cell phone bills ko. O, ‘di ba? Saka, malapit na Pasko, ano?

Last night, for some reason, I typed the keyword “smartphone” while browsing and I found the Palm Centro. Oh my goodness, I forgot all about the P1i. There’s one problem though. The Palm Centro is currently available only with a Sprint account. Even if I can get someone to buy one in the U.S. and send it to me, it won’t work with any of the local networks. There’s hope though because I read somewhere that an open-line Palm Centro will be available in 2008. The question is whether I can wait that long.

Of course, there’s the iPhone too…

*As corrected (see comment #1 below).

It’s W960i. Not W950i.

Ah, sorry. May ganun ba? I’ll buy you a W960i then, you can buy me a new Mac and a new dSLR. O, di ba, may Christmas gifts na tayo for one another?

awww, ang sweet nyong dalawa!

re: iPhone, mukhang maganda nga, I saw it at Cookie’s blog and oh my, nakaka temp bumili. I think she got hers in the US and it costs around 15K ata. not bad, di ba?

I’m so loving my iphone!! Yun nga lang I had to turn off all updates kasi sabi sa akin mag-revert daw to the locked status. Ipa-unlock ko na naman. Pero by next year it pwede na daw. Have someone buy it for you in the US. Mura lang. Mines the 4gb lang. The 8gb is around 19k lang.

Ang ayoko lang sa kanya, wala siyang message tones. Ringtones meron pero walang message tones. I checked na on all the forums pero yun talaga ang problema niya.

feng, o hayan, kasunod mo na sya hehehe

Kongkong, you mean walang choices ng message tone o wala talagang message alert tone at all?

walang choices. either on or off lang

Ah ok. Sa akin hindi problem yun basta tumutonog hehehehe

Just wondering, why aren’t you interested in a Palm Treo? :-)

I’ve been using Palm PDAs for years; what I have now is a Tungsten E. Been thinking a lot whether I should buy a Treo; ang di ko ma-decide is if I want to stay with the Palm OS (which I’m very happy with plus I have a lot software that I already use) or move to Windows, na baka wala akong makuhang counterpart ng aking mga applications/tools.

Hi Nikita. Actually, when I reached the Palm site, I was already looking at the Treo. I was clicking the links on the sidebar to view the different models, saw the Palm Centro and boom! LOL One downside of the Treo for me is the size. The Centro is smaller. I like the size of the iPhone but it’s really an entertainment piece more than a business gadget. So… dunno yet. Haven’t decided.

I know what you mean. Tagal ko na ring iniisip if I want to keep my PDA and cellphone separate, or get a smartphone. I have two lines pa kasi, Smart and Globe (many reasons why), and plus my Palm, this means three gadgets I have in my bag at any one time. Gadget lady na nga ang tawag sa akin e. :-)

I’ll be keeping close tabs on this decision-making process of yours. :-)

Hi, Connie! I’m a silent lurker in your blog but I couldn’t help but comment on phones because my husband and I are both gadget geeks. He gave me an iPhone and a SE P1i for our anniversary this year to replace my Nokias. I love my iPhone (it’s really cool) but I needed a second phone to make up for its missing features. The iPhone can’t forward messages (I’m part of the text brigade in my son’s class pa naman), there is no copy and paste feature (I have to rewrite everything down), and it can’t send or receive MMS messages. The P1i has a higher learning curve (I’ve never had a SE phone before) and the qwerty keyboard is a little tricky but I soon got the hang of it and I can text one-handed na! If you do get a Palm Centro, can you kindly write a review, please? Hope you get your Christmas wishes! Regards and thanks!

Kittymama, are you happy with the P1i? That’s what I had been planning on getting until I got diverted by the Palm Centro (love the color!). The P1i is an “upgrade” of the M600i which I find so useful. That’s why I find the P1i attractive. Super sanay na ako sa M600i so konti na lang aaralin sa P1i. In fact, when PLDT DSL conks out, it’s the only way I can meet my deadlines (which is why I bought it in the first place — document editing, push e-mail, etc).

o no more need to be a silent lurker, ha?

Hi Ms. Connie, you should go for an imate JASJAM. Mas bagay sa u. i was thinking of getting a P1 as well noon. Then hubby suggested I go for an IMATE. Buti na lang nakining ako.

I will be waiting for a complete review! Kasi I am also in that mode. Got Globe and Sun plus a PDA (HP ipaq) at talagang ang bigat na ng bag ko.

I have been hesitating for the longest time to get a smartphone as I wanted my mobile separate from my PDA.

Plus, Nokia ang phones ko ever since. Am kinda hesitant to go with a non-N one in case other brands are not that user-friendly. Ang hirap mag decide!

Ria, thank you for the info ha. Am not familiar with I-mate but I’m looking at the site now. And available in the Philippines daw sabi sa isang forum. My only reservation is its Windows platform. Naka-Macbook kasi ako, eh. Baka problematic mag-sync.

Jane, actually, nag-bid na ako sa eBay for an iPhone. If I don’t get it, I’ll check the I-mate that Ria mentioned. Looks pa lang killer na — ganda!!!

Hi, Connie! Yes, I am very satisfied with the P1i. For a newbie on the SE platform, I didn’t find the shift difficult at all. It has the form factor of the M600i but it’s actually the latest in the P series so you get the best of both worlds- more functionality without the attendant headaches that accompanied the P990i. Plus I got a $100 voucher that can be used to download softare to further enhance the functionality of the P1. Now, who doesn’t love freebies? :-)
(P.S. It’s very comforting to know that I am not the only one who lugs a bag heavy with gadgets. I can’t part with my Palm too.)

Kittymama, you retained your Palm even with the P1i?

Yes, I’m afraid so. I can’t throw it out… guess I’m a packrat at heart. I’ve transferred everything in my Palm to my phones but I like the security of having a back-up of a back-up of a back-up (oh, well, looks like I’ve got some major personality issues as well, hehe).

One of these days, when I am really brave na, I will give it away to my eldest son so he can make use of it. I just don’t know how well he’ll take to the Hello Kitty G-mask. :-)

Hi, Ms. Connie!
Interesting talk about the latest communication gadget here. I think I favor with your choice for Palm Centro. Being a Palm user myself, I’m sure Palm Centro is a great tool both for personal productivity and communications.
Personally, I’m using a Tungsten E2 for my PDA and a Sony Ericsson K750i and an Asus phone for mobile communication. I wanted to separate phones and PDA so I’m satisfied with the present setup of my gadget. But I do appreciate much smartphone run by Palm OS. I always thought they’re cool :)

Yes Connie, mabigat sa bag ang maraming gadgets, but like Kittymama, iba ang may backup sa backup. And like Jane, for the longest time, I wanted to keep my PDA separate from my phone, pero I think it’s about time mabawasan na ang bitbit ko. Am really inclined to get a Treo 680, pero marami pa rin nagsasabi sa akin to get a Windows Mobile smartphone.

Kitymamma and Nikita, I can’t imagine. When cell phones were THAT BIG, as in during the analog stage, I always complained that I was tired from shopping even before I could buy anything — because of the weight of the bag hanging on my shoulder. When cell phones got smaller and smaller and packed with more features, I couldn’t be more thankful.

Dodong, sorry took so long to get your comment online. First time commenters pass through moderation kasi. So, you’re part of the “lotsa gadgets” club. :)

hi Con…I’m a Palm Tech Support Rep and yes, the Centro is cool and the camera resolution is better than the Treo 680. Its smaller too and I think its sold at $99 but only available with Sprint, sa ngayon. But very soon, we’ll be coming out with a GSM version. Right now, I’m using a Treo 680 (GSM) and a Treo 700W (windows) but I only use it as a simulation units since its a Verizon phone.

If you have any queries about any Palm Smartphone, shoot me an email and I’ll be happy to answer them. Kung may Palm ka na and you need troubleshooting, I’ll be happy to assist you.

Thanks, Brenda. I’ll wait for the Centro. Unless the legit open line iPhone hits the local market first. I’ve done enough gadget shopping for the year, I think. The Canon EOS 40D killed my budget hehehehe

I live here in the US and purchased the Centro last night. LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It is a Treo. I synched all my info from my Treo 680 no problem. It is light, great sound and good battery life. They are running a special $99.00 US currency until January 2008. Just fyii!

Saw the Centro today 1st hand and it’s really neat! Very very small and compact, color red, ang cuuuuuuuute! It really looks like a candybar phone rather than a smartphone, but of course it can do everything a Treo can do. Got it from a reliable source that it will be available here on february 2008, price is below 20k daw.
