Human Touch

When I’m out shopping for household items, I normally don’t give coasters a second glance. In fact, until yesterday, I don’t remember having bought coasters in my entire life. The only coasters I own are gifts. It’s funny, really, since I detest the sight of water rings especially on glass tops. Back when I was still working in an office, I berated more than one lawyer on more than one occasion about leaving water rings on my table. See, most lawyers are talkative and restless by nature. Instead of working their asses off in their own offices, they go around bugging other lawyers discussing their theories about their cases and they’re oblivious to how bored you are and how they are eating into your own precious work time. So they go hopping from one office to another, coffee mugs or soft drinks cans or bottles in hand, and the moment they start reciting their theories, they put down their drinks on your table. By the time they’re done, their drinks have left water rings. And I really hated that. So I kept coasters in a drawer. And even before they could put their drinks on my table, I’d hold up my hand and made them wait until I’ve retrieved a coaster from the drawer.
Yesterday, we went to Eastwood to see Fast & Furious (haaay, enjoy!). We were going to a dinner party after that but we had about two hours to kill. We went to A Different Bookstore (it has moved to the Eastwood Mall), Speedy gave me an early Mother’s Day gift (I insisted) then browsed the other shops. There was one selling pillow cases with very unique designs, Speedy said he ought to buy me the one with the “You ought to be working” print then we spotted some very cool wall clocks designed like splats. Since Sam and Alex had both been hankering for wall clocks for their bedrooms, I offered to buy them each a wall clock. Problem was there were none in the colors they preferred. Too bad, really, because the splat design was so cute. I browsed around some more and discovered coasters in the same splat design. And they were available in ten colors. I chose four and I was so happy.

They’re made of PVC plastic, they don’t slide or skid on glass tops, drinking glasses and coffee mugs fit into the grooves. P145.00 each. The maker is Human Touch, a Thai company, and the Eastwood Mall outlet is the first in the Philippines. The shop is so new it didn’t even have credit card services. I had to scrounge inside my purse for cash.
While I was choosing the colors, Sam was pestering her father to buy her a hand strap with a dangling figure in a very…. ummm… unique design.

What can I say? Sam has such a sense of humor. In fact, there was a table lamp in a similar design and the switch was the boy’s penis. Of course she HAD to turn the lamp on.
And what did Alex get? Click here. And don’t miss the text below the photo in the link to get the full story.

“See, most lawyers are talkative and restless by nature…”
tsismoso sila. hahaha. sori pero it’s true, lalo na corp. lawyers. nice sources of stories…
lalo na pag nagkikita ang mga fratmen-lawyers. dami chismis!!! ansaya-saya (for me. hehehe).
Hahaha You GO, gurl! Yan ang reporter, malakas ang pang-amoy sa effective na source. hahahaha
I finally made it yesterday to the Dapitan market you had written about before. Wow, that place is great. I wish I had found that place before. Even with ‘kano’ prices, it was still substantially cheaper that Tiendesitas and its ilk. Any more recommendations like that?
Glad you had a nice time there. Hot, wasn’t it? But you can forgive that what with all those beautiful items for sale.
When I discover more, I’ll post it here in the blog.
Ms. Connie;
Re: most lawyers are a talkative and restless.LOL.So true. Para bang hindi makapag-isip kung walang kausap at kung di lilipat ng cubicle.
Sinabi mo. Parang kailangan parati may sounding board. I never did that though. I always liked PEACE AND QUIET hahahaha
Hot is an understatement. I am not trying to be arte, but I live in the expat bubble. I go from my airconditioned house to my airconditioned car to my airconditioned office and back again so I am not used to the heat at all. You can tell it is holy week! Good tune up for my annual torture este trip to the wife’s province hahaha
Re “annual torture” HAHAHAHAHA I love the way you put it! Filipino culture, you know? ALL THOSE relatives. We don’t do torture trips, annual or otherwise. Only pleasure trips hehehehe
The coasters are so cute! I want to have those too.
“All those relatives” – even more of an understatement!! Can they all be from the same family!!!
Luckily I live far away so they can only ambush me once a year — they can’t afford to come to Manila hahahaha
You don’t make the pilgrimage to the ancestral home province? How do you escape that? I want the secret!!
