Hard to resist Ghirardelli baking chocolates at 70% off
We needed to replenish the stock of vegetables in the house so I went to the supermarket yesterday. Typhoon Frank lashed across the country over the weekend and resulted in massive blackouts so a lot of food items were on sale. You know how it is — food items need to be kept at a certain temperature; otherwise, the freshness is affected.
So, there I was, leisurely pushing the grocery cart from aisle to aisle. That’s the best thing about going to the supermarket alone — no one’s rushing me, no one’s whining to buy this and buy that. If that needs explaining… See, when the kids go with us, the bill goes sky high. And Speedy doesn’t like spending too much time in the supermarket — more time equals opportunity to BUY MORE and that’s not good. When there’s just me, I have all the time in the world to read labels, compare weights and prices and check out new products.
Yesterday, on almost every aisle, there were huge red tags screaming silently at me. 50% OFF! 70% OFF! Buy two, take one FREE! Easy enough to turn my back on products we don’t use like spaghetti sauces. I make my own spaghetti sauce so even if it’s 70% off, there’s no temptation there. But it isn’t as easy with things that I USED TO BUY. You know, before the low-fat, low-sugar diet.
I was in the baking section when I saw the Ghirardelli chocolates. Hard to miss, actually, with the large red tags with the discounted prices. Ghirardelli chocolates are a luxury (I’ve often used the less expensive Hershey’s) but the few times I used Ghirardelli for baking, well, the quality, to this day, remains unparalleled. You can imagine how I felt. The chance to bake with Ghirardelli at such LOW, LOW PRICES. But chocolate bars are in the “Avoided” column, rather than the “Allowed” column, in the list that the doctor gave me. I struggled with my will power and…
I walked away. I actually walked away from all that Ghirardelli chocolates.
As a consolation, I told myself I’d buy a bag of BAKED potato chips. I went straight to the chips section and I found something even better. Brown rice chips — gluten free, no cholesterol, no preservatives, no artificial flavors and zero trans fat.

Tastes similar to tortilla chips (corn flour is an ingredient) but with a piquant flavor because of the sesame seeds. The drawback? The price (P135.00 for a 156 gram bag) and the not-so-negligible sodium content. Still a great find though.
A third of what’s been written about me is true, a third is half-true and the rest consists of drug-induced hallucinations. I suppose I’d better let me, rather than them, tell you

that’s definitely a great find! i mean, P135 for a gluten-free snack? in a GFCF store I visited recently, ang mamahal ng mga snacks! around P250-P400 ang presyo. susme.
where’s that supermarket? sa Shopwise ba? sana may sale pa. makapunta nga at maka hoard. hehe.
Yes, Shopwise. P135.00 is the regular price. And it’s filling. Can’t finish the content of the bag in two to three sittings. I was munching the chips while watching DVD, hindi ko pa rin naubos.
Connie, congratulations on the “walking away”! The temptation will always be there, the battle will always be there so everytime we walk away it is a big deal.
nag-walk out ka sa chocolates??? syet, parang kung ako yun, bibigyan ko ng justification bakit pwede akong kumain. congratulations! ang ganda mo, lola!
mataas ba ang carb content nung chips? ang recommended nila for someone who is diabetic (which I’m glad you’re not) is 15g to 45g of carbs per main meal or 15g to 30g of carb per snack. kaya dun ako napapakamot kapag nag-go-grocery ako kasi i have to be careful how much carbs I can eat, ergo, how much servings I can have. kalurki!
Geri, “everytime we walk away it is a big deal.”
Oh, you said it so perfectly. Like it’s the achievement of the year. Right there, it hurts, but afterwards the feeling of “victory” is so good.
Salamat, Ate Sienna. Lalo pang gaganda HAHAHAHA
Carb is 19g per serving. 5 servings per bag. O, not bad, ‘di ba?
Connie, if you ever get a chance to visit San Francisco then you’ll be in heaven if you go to Ghirardelli Square near Fisherman’s Wharf! All the chocolate you could ever want just a little can’t hurt, right??
I, too, think it’s the best chocolate in the world! When I worked in a cafe in SF, we used only Ghirardelli to make mocha lattes! It was my first time tasting Ghirardelli (I had just moved to SF) and I couldn’t get enough of it!
Hmmmn… ma-try nga. Btw, na-try nyo na yung PODS Vegetarian Pea Snack ng Oishi?
Good for you for resisting! I know how hard it is to resist “bad” foods. I am supposed to be on a diet yet I just had a KFC chicken breast for lunch. Aaargh.
Talk about comfort food! Chocolate is not all that bad actually as the dark variety has anti-cancer properties too — so not necessarily a guilty pleasure after all
Nikita, re “All the chocolate you could ever want just a little can’t hurt” Oh my. LOL I wish! I wish!
Bem, no, not yet. I’ve been seeing a lot of veggie chips lately.
Pinayhekmi, KFC is probably one of hardest to resist. And pizza. And lechon. And… tama na. Humahaba list ng hard to resist. LOL
You know, Miguk, I knew very few people who like dark chocolate. I don’t know if it’s a matter of unfamiliarity though. Me, I love dark chocolate with mint.
Me too, that is my favorite! But I am also partial to white chocolate yum
Chocolate. I take chocolate made from cacao 5 mornings a week with oat meal. After dinner, I will have a few servings of dark (up to 70% cocoa) chocolate to satisfy my cravings for healthy dessert. Yum!
not-so-negligible sodium content you say, hmmmmmmm, taking that in context with your other article about splenda, all i can say is, that if the sugar does not kill you, the salt will finish you off,
try your best to cut down on your sodium intake or your kidneys will be in deep trouble when you start to age,
i believe you would want to be here on earth and not in heaven when your daughters marry and present you with your grandkids.
Actually, Pirkash, I can do without the chips altogether. But there are days when the craving is something I can’t ignore.
How could you?!? 70% off!! Galing mo!! Kung ako yan hay naku..chronic hoarder pa naman ako pag may mga ganyang sale. Alam mo ba dati nag-sale ang Huggies sa Baguio (we were on vacation). It was buy1take1. Hoarding to the max!! Puno ang sasakyan ng diapers pauwi. As in..no space except the front kung saan kami nakaupo. Saan yan..Shopwise? Ongoing pa kaya? Punta ako bukas sa Cubao branch.
HAHAHAHA dunno if it’s still ongoing. LOL
