‘Fresh milk and a kapok tree’
That’s the title of my debut article with Code Red Magazine, a family-oriented quarterly publication of the Salesians of Don Bosco.

I’ve been itching to make the announcement but I decided to wait until the article was actually on print. Didn’t want to be presumptuous.
For those who are curious about how I get my writing gigs… e-mail. The offer to write a bi-weekly op-ed column in Manila Standard Today came via e-mail. The Code Red assignment, well… the editor couldn’t find my e-mail address so she left a comment on this blog. By “editor”, I mean Carol who is also a part of Pinoy Moms Network.
What’s so special about writing for Code Red? Well, it’s the second step towards bringing my blogs on print. I blog about three things mainly: law and government; food; and family and parenting. The law and government part became my op-ed column for Manila Standard Today. And now, the family and parenting articles will come out with the quarterly issues of Code Red. The only thing that still has to see print is the food part. That will happen when I publish my cookbook — which, by the way, is finished but I am still trying to find the best publishing deal I can find because I don’t want to feel like I’m getting ripped off.
Of course, I also do a lot of photography. But my photos on print? I’m not that presumptuous.
Well, unless it counts that a photo I took was published with ‘Fresh milk and a kapok tree’. That’s Alex and Speedy standing in front of an ancient kapok tree in U.P. Los Baños.
What’s the big deal about getting on print, anyway? It’s just another medium, actually, but it also means being able to reach an audience beyond the blog readers. That, alone, makes it special.

Hehe I had a feeling it was Code Red Magazine. You truly deserve to shine out to print media. Congrats.
Way to go Ms. Connie!

Carol: I was going to buy a copy of the magazine at the Quezon Ave branch of National Bookstore, but it wasn’t available daw. Where else can I buy?
Hey – that’s a huge kapok tree! I didn’t know they grew so large – almost like a California redwood. One day, we shall visit your tree in UPLB. Funny, my wife and I used to date there eons ago but I never saw that tree. Must have been busy with other things.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi, Chateau. I’ve been told that the March issue has been delivered to National Q.A. and other branches already. By the way, each branch only gets a very limited number of copies.
Truly, you’re a Renaissance woman!
Love that photo of yours, by the way.
Hi Carol. I will check tomorrow then! Thanks
Have you tried the carabao milk products at UPLB? There’s a branch of the Philippine Carabao Center here (just before you pass the bridge going to DTRI, on your left). I like their milk-o-gel and yogurt comes in different flavors.

Gay, thanks, time to go to UPLB. And soon.
