Exterior color of your house

by Connie Veneracion on May 27, 2008

If a house were like a web page, I could try different colors and color mixes without incurring too many expenses. But the reality is that if I can’t make up my mind about what the color of the house should be, I might as well leave it with its all-white exterior. But I don’t like flat white. I’m okay with creams and beiges but not flat sepulcher white.

I originally wanted to paint the house green to blend with its surroundings including the huge mango tree that grows in the garden. But no one in my family liked the idea of a green house. With the red brick roof tiles, everyone said the house would look like a Christmas tree. Since it isn’t possible to paint and repaint until we get that perfect shade we like, I had to resort to other methods for choosing the color of the house’s exterior.

Better Homes and Gardens has a free service called Color-A-Home. You will have to register (free) to avail of the service. Hassle, I know, but it’s worth it. You can select a house model that is most similar to yours and, with a few clicks, you can try different paint colors on the house, mixing and matching for maximum effect.

Above are samples of the colors I tried. On the right is the green house that Speedy and the girls said looked like a Christmas tree. Beige and cream seemed to be the consensus.

If you find the pages of Better Homes and Gardens too slow-loading, or if don’t want to bother registering, BEHR (a paint manufacturer) offers a similar free service that requires no registration.
