Exchanging Christmas gifts
About the time we put up the Christmas tree, Alex asked me what I wanted her to get me for my Christmas gift. Not wanting her to spend her savings, I asked her to just cook breakfast everyday during the Christmas break. She knit her eyebrows and said, “Can’t it be something I can just buy? It’s too hard to cook breakfast because I’ll have to get up early.” Okay, fine, so I said she could get me anything she wanted and it was quite alright if she couldn’t get me anything at all.
About a week before the Christmas break, Sam went shopping with her friends and came home with a Christmas gift for Alex — a ring with the symbol of Konohagakure.
The ring is too large for any of Alex’s fingers but it was the last piece and Sam decided to get it for her anyway. She suggested that Alex wear it as a pendant and we even had a discussion as to what kind of chain would look good with it. It’s a silver ring so you can just imagine the price. Sam is like that with gifts. And, being such a Naruto fan, Alex loves the ring, naturally.
About a week later, Alex went to the supermarket to buy chocolates (Christmas gifts for some of her friends). She handed Sam a small tube of chocolate balls (Meiji, the Japanese brand) and said, “Merry Christmas!”
Sam couldn’t believe it and said, “I gave you a silver ring and you give me a this tiny tube of chocolates that cost, what, twenty pesos?”
Alex looked at her with what seemed like I-N-D-I-G-N-A-T-I-O-N that Sam could think the chocolates cost THAT MUCH and said, “That’s not twenty pesos; that’s P18.75!” (Update: Alex checked the receipt after that and the price was P31.75)
The exchange lasted longer than that, full of good-natured asaran, with Sam munching on the chocolates as they recited what they had given each other over the years. As I listened (I was cooking), I wondered if, based on my previous conversation with Alex about Christmas gifts, she somehow got the idea that the more inexpensive a gift, the better it is. Considering how fast Sam finished the Meiji chocolates, at least in that case, maybe she’s right. I never heard any complaints about the P18.75 price tag after that.

Hubs other wedding band (he has 2 after someone stole the gold band from one of our parties in NY) is silver like that with tribal etchings. The other one is in black with etchings too. I can never find one in my size though.
HAHAHA, hindi naman siguro nanghingi pa ng chocolate si Alex no? That would have been my children’s move.
Ang ganda ng design ng ring. Sam has such good taste.
Dexie, I have the same problem with ready-made jewelry. They’re often too big! In Baguio where silver jewelry is half the price all year round, it’s so hard to get a ring that fits.
