Do you have a gleek in the house?

For the past few months, I’ve been tempted to conduct a survey among parents with teenage kids. The question: has Glee invaded your home? It sure has invaded mine. Because of Alex, not Sam. Sam is nuts over Adam Lambert. Her classmates say that if Adam comes to the Philippines to do a concert, Sam will just waste her ticket — she won’t see the show at all because she’ll faint at the sight of him.

But I digress… I was going to write about Glee. Alex, our resident gleek, can’t seem to open her mouth without mentioning the show and its star, Lea Michele. Sometimes, I feel like sticking cotton balls in my ears. Not that it would deter Alex. When she wants an audience, she’ll demand an audience which, in most cases, is me.

Not that Glee is all that bad. Okay, I find many of the antics exaggerated. Speedy says the plot is not proper for teenagers referring to the sub-plot involving Mr. Schuester, Glee Club director, who is married to Terri, his high school sweetheart. Mr. Schuester is smitten with the school’s guidance counsellor, Emma, and in an attempt to save her marriage, Terri fakes a pregnancy and makes a deal with Quinn, a pregnant Glee Club member, to adopt her baby. There was one scene where Terri brings her husband to the hospital for her sonogram and, with the connivance of a technician, a CD was played to show a live baby on the monitor. It might seem funny for some but neither Speedy nor I laughed.

But I have to admit that some production numbers are good. Like the one when the cast sang Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors and Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked (oh, I have the book and I still haven’t read it). And the most recent episode, yet to be shown in the Philippines, features the songs of Madonna.

MadonnaThe curious thing is that, until recently, Alex thought that Madonna only sang “serious” songs. And that’s mostly because, as a child, her exposure to Madonna was limited to the movie Evita. I told them Madonna was a huge star before Evita and I’d sing snippets of Like A Virgin and they thought I was joking. I think Alex was shocked when, years later, she saw portions of a DVD with a compilation of Madonna’s concerts. She was much younger at the time and I couldn’t let her watch everything as some of the numbers were very racy indeed.

So, eventually, Alex discovered that Madonna was a pop singer before she landed the role of Evita in the movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical. And now Madonna’s songs, including Like A Prayer, are on Glee. If you’re not familiar with Like A Prayer, it raised howls of protests when the music video came out in the late 1980s. The video featured burning crosses (Ku Klux Klan plot), Madonna making love to Saint Martin de Porres and Madonna developing stigmata.

And now that Madonna’s songs are on Glee, perhaps, they can serve as a form of meeting ground for me and Alex. Her Glee generation and my Madonna generation. I just introduced her to Live to Tell, one of Madonna’s best songs in my opinion. When the Madonna episode of Glee is aired, well, at least we can talk about it without me feeling like reaching for cotton balls.

I haven’t seen GLEE yet, maybe because I think I am too old to watch the show.

Madonna rocks, and I like LIVE TO TELL too but I am more of a Cindy Lauper fan (girls just wanna have fun fever) :)

My younger sister is a gleek. I’ve seen a few episodes and they are indeed funny. Brings back the glory days of high school, making fun of other people at school. :P

Though I’ve yet to find the time to sit down and finish the first season. Perhaps one of this days…

  11. zara, whoa, I don’t think I saw that… but then again, I don’t remember seeing any episode in its entirety. I just watch the musical numbers hehehehe

gracegab, I was in Glee Club too and if we sang the way they do in Glee, we’d all be Broadway materials now hahaha Re Madonna: they didn’t sing True Blue, according to Alex.

Mella, hahaha was that an effect of the anesthetic or her way of dealing with the miscarriage?
