Disposable paper cups and some environmental concerns

by Connie Veneracion on December 1, 2007

disposable paper cups

Pretty, aren’t they? But I didn’t buy these disposable paper cups for their looks.

We’re waterless again. In a week, the subdivision will cut off the deep well water supply and Manila Water will be our water supplier. The problem is that when Manila Water was laying out the pipes, their people thought that the row of six houses just outside the subdivision gate were not part of the subdivision. Duh, the six model houses not being part of the subdivision. How very funny. I don’t know where to throw the grenade — at the Manila Water office or the office of the subdivision developer.

Anyway, back to the paper cups. I was waiting for the coffee to cool a bit and wondered… See, I chose paper cups because I didn’t want to buy plastic or styrofoam. But then, how many trees are cut down every year to supply us with disposable paper cups (and toilet paper and kitchen paper towels)? We may not be adding to the pollution by not using plastic cups but how much are we contributing to forest denudation?

There are no easy answers when it comes to saving the environment, is there?

We have a separate container where recyclable trash like plastics, paper, aluminum cans are deposited and trash collectors pick it up every other week. San Diego is running out of places to dump trash that’s why recycling is a big thing here.

We can still recycle the paper cups unlike the styrofoam/plastic cups that will need years and years to decompose. :)

iskolar111, naku, dito recycling is only implemented in Marikina. Elsewhere, it’s stil labo-labo.

Cheh, pati dyan wala tubig? Aba, a rich country like Germany without water = crisis indeed. You have a nice weekend too. Will do the meme, no worries hehehehehe

I love those paper cups, ganda ng design! ;-) But there’s another thing that I love more, the way you captured the cups, yung style. Kung ako yan parang bowling pins kong ihehelera siguro hahaha!

Gary Granada in a concert I watched years ago commented something like this in reference to the plastic bottle of mineral water he was drinking from:

It is politically incorrect to drink healthy, clean water in containers that are non-biodegradable. We cleanse our body but we pollute the environment.

Oh how very well said! Gosh, I never thought of that. And we drink bottled water at home.

I bring my own travel cup no matter where I go. Say I go to Starbucks, I just hand in my cup and they will fill it right up with whatever my order is.

Lately, our municipality has raised an issue that these paper cups may contain carcinogens which are not good for the body as we all know. Apparently, the was that makes the paper cups spill free melt and get mixed with the beverage.

The thing is, the coating on the paper cups also makes them non-biodegradable and also non-recyclable! Plastics also leach out nasty chemicals into your body. Stainless Steel creates more GHGs than reasonable (2.4lbs of CO2 equivalent). Ceramic is the best bet for a reusable travel mug but only if you use it at least 460 times and try getting one with a travel lid. It seems that one should just quit drinking coffee unless its at home :(
