Yellow hibiscus (gumamela)

We know it as gumamela. One specie, the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the state flower of Hawaii and the national flower of Malaysia. The photo was taken at the Juinio residence in Roxas City and edited with Adobe Photoshop.

Photography tips:

1. Use a wide aperture setting to blur the background. The photo above was taken with a f/8 aperture setting. Out-of-focus backgrounds to draw attention to the primary subject is also known as bokeh.

2. How the final look was achieved: a) The photo was sharpened. b) A new layer was added. c) The Gaussian blur filter was applied to the new layer, multiplied and set at 70% opacity. Final result: the background turned darker, the yellows became more vivid and the overall look is softer.
