Custom-made hardwood furniture

Yesterday was order-the-furniture day. We already had “some ideas” about where to buy the furniture but we had not really made up our minds. We had scoured more than a dozen places, including Tiendesitas, Greenhills and malls, and still hadn’t made any final decisions. We were clear on one thing though — we want hardwood furniture, we want the covers of the cushions to be removable and washable and we definitely do not want those antique-looking pieces with carvings. We want rustic, very Asian, with clean lines, no frills… like bringing the outdoors indoor.

One of the places we visited, Mandaue Foam and Furniture along Ortigas Avenue in Cainta, had some good dining tables and chairs and if we would not be able to find something we liked better, we were going buy one of the six-seaters with a round table. For the living room set, it was a toss between something we found at Tiendesitas and another that we saw in Greenhills. The designs were similar but the Greenhills store was offering better prices.

Before dawn yesterday, Speedy got a text message from his sister saying their mother had been taken to the hospital and was in intensive care. Naturally, before we went furniture-shopping, we passed by the hospital to see how she was doing. Talk gravitated towards the new house (my mother-in-law wants to see the house before the house-warming party  ) and there was this pleasant surprise. My sister-in-law, Ava, used to be Housekeeping Manager in a boutique hotel in Mimosa. She started working there when the hotel was still under construction, she had a hand in furnishing the hotel, so she knew A LOT of furniture makers. She gave us the name of one manufacturer who also had an outlet in Greenhills.

Jackpot. I mean, hey, if the quality of work is good enough to furnish a hotel, the quality must be superb. It turned out too that we didn’t have to choose from what was available — we could have all the furniture custom-made. We were handed some catalogs and Speedy and I started browsing. We could specify the sizes, the wood finish, the color and material of the seat covers. Oh. My. Goodness. It was simply superb. So, what did we choose?

That’s for the living room furniture above. An oversized three-seater sofa, two oversized arm chairs, a coffee table (love that low coffee table) and two side tables. In Philippine mahogany with flat (but darker) finish.

Dining room furniture design

For the dining room table and chairs, we chose the one in the photo above except that the table will be round and 54 inches in diameter. Also in Philippine mahogany.

There will also be bar stools, the design based on the chairs in the dining room set. Philippine mahogany as well.

The manufacturer is MRT Furniture. You’ll find them at the second floor of the Greenhills Shopping Center. Their main showroom is in Bo. Batik San Pablo, Telebastagan, San Fernando Pampanga.

The furniture will be ready in two to three weeks. I’ll post photos later after we’ve moved and put them all in their proper places.

Congratulations! Nothing better than a Filipino crafted hardwood furniture with contemporary design.
Is that made out of Nara wood?

  2. krista says:

hi connie, congrats on your new home! btw, are the custom-made furniture at MRT expensive? approximately, how much is the dining set, if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve been looking around for furniture too and i had an impression that custom-made is more expensive than the ones readily available at the malls. thanks!

  3. Connie says:

JMonreal, no, narra is too expensive. They’re made from Philippine mahogany.

Krista, maybe you can visit MRT at Greenhills and ask for a quotation. I have to say though that the price we got is cheaper than what you’ll find in malls. Based on what we’ve seen (and we’ve seen A LOT), hardwood dining sets in mall shops range from 60K to 120K.

love the design! clean and simple. and darker finish is more beautiful i must agree. it gives an elegant feel. congrats! i believe your family is totally excited with your new house.

sa market market me mga furniture outlets din, and i believe they have custom made din, and prices are good din naman though not sure in comparison sa prices sa greenhills.

ot, hope your mom-in-law gets well soon.

  5. Connie says:

Thank you, Beng! We are very, very excited. :) We would have gone to Market! Market! too but the distance between Makati and Antipolo might mean higher delivery charges. Baka overall eh mapamahal.

My mother-in-law is going home today. :)

Glad to hear your mother-in-law is better now and going home. I think she needs R & R in Antipolo even for just a few days. My mother-in-law who is 90 years old commute between Masbate and Q.C. every month. When she is in town, she spends time in our vacation house in Antipolo. She loves the atmosphere – clean/fresh air, peaceful, quite, abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables …it’s the whole package Antipolo has to offer.

We think too that a few days every week away from city pollution will do her good. She’s so attached to her house…

Just an idea in case you want to add some colors to go with your new furniture. This is what our interior designer told us when we remodeled our living room, dining room, kitchen and family room.

Our living room/dining room/conversation pit is combined to one open space. I guess the theme is Asian/Tropical contemporary with wood dining set. The two walls opposite each other are dark red, the entrance side is moss green, and the window side is beige with dark bamboo roll ups.

The kitchen/breakfast nook/family room is also combined to one open space with contemporary wood cabinets, round table and chairs in honey color shade. The two walls opposite each other are dark purple, the adjacent side is moss green too and the sliding door side is beige with bamboo roll ups.

I was against these color combinations at the start, but the boss said …go! Again she was right. It looks great after everything was done.

  9. JMonreal says:

Mali pala ang sabi kung color scheme. Moss green was only used in the foyer. Red on opposing walls with beige on adjacent walls. The other room was purple on opposing walls with beige on adjacent walls.

    Hi Connie!

Just want to ask if you have a contact number of MRT Furniture? Thanks

  11. Connie says:

JMonreal, it it weren’t so warm in the Philippines, I’d consider darker colors too. But as it is…
