Would you vote for her?
We already know that celebrity status in this country is a passport to government office. We find entertainment and media personalities in just about every level of government. They are city and municipal councilors, provincial board members, vice mayors, mayors, governors, congressmen, senators and, yes, one got as far as the vice presidency. While being a celebrity does... (more »»)
Of mafia dons and unproven accusations
Last Tuesday’s Senate session was shocking. And that’s an understatement. By now, we’re used to sensational exposes on the Senate floor but senators squabbling during a session, and in full public view, is not that common – yet. With the quality of elected officials we have been getting, perhaps in time, squabbling will become a norm and we will all just... (more »»)
An afternoon in Phuket’s Patong Beach
When people ask how I found Phuket, I always say I loved the food. The truth is, the food is just about the only thing that I liked about Phuket. Which is not to say that it’s a terrible place. It’s just not the kind of place for me. For purposes of this article, when I say “Phuket” I mean Patong Beach and its vicinity. Phuket is an island but we didn’t... (more »»)
Singapore’s Integrated Resorts: some thoughts on gambling and casinos
Last November, while taking a “duck tour” around Singapore’s Marina Bay, the Filipino tour guide, Chris, pointed to three side-by-side structures still under construction. He explained that they were the hotels within the Marina Bay Sands Resort, the second integrated resort in Singapore, the first being the Resorts World in Sentosa. The soft launch of the four hotels... (more »»)
Sometimes, it’s okay not to be the first

In the age of mass media, and the internet, people have developed the “scoop” mentality. Everyone wants to be the first. Media outfits will pay good money to get the scoop on an event and internet publishers sometimes try to out-scoop media. The more serious movie goer and book reader do it to their peers too. You can see it from the way people queue up on the box office... (more »»)
What Haiti needs and does not need
Last week, I came across a news report where U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was quoted as saying, “It is biblical, the tragedy that continues to stalk Haiti and the Haitian people” (from “Clinton scraps South Pacific trip after Haiti quake,” Reuters, January 14, 2010). I posted it on Twitter and commented that I USED TO think that she was smart. I was reminded... (more »»)
Wrong love and the spoiled brat
I purposely refrained from writing about Jason Aguilar Ivler even after the mistaken deportation of overseas worker Jason Vivar Aguilar. It makes my blood boil when the government engages in a no-holds barred manhunt for a suspect when the victim is a government official or a member of his family, a dedication hardly shown when the victim is some unknown whose family does not... Alternative film festival
Over the holiday break, as I read fellow columnist Bong Austero’s two-part assessment of the 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival, I sighed and thanked my lucky stars that my family opted to do our film watching at home. In DVDs. No need to jostle with the crowds, there are more titles to choose from and the cost is much cheaper. Original DVDs of not-so-recent movies are... (more »»)
Dear Teacher Blah

When I was a student, Home Economics was exclusively for girls. We cooked and sewed while the boys had their Automotive class. That was then. Cooking is now part of TLE (technology and livelihood education), a subject that boys and girls alike are required to take and complete. Our conservative society is finally embracing modern ideas that have banished the notion that cooking... (more »»)
Prom Night
For Alex and her classmates, Senior Prom means a dinner-dance on January 16 at a semi -private restaurant in Antipolo. Originally built as a house, the restaurant is gated with a large veranda in front that offers a panoramic view of the night lights of Metro Manila. We gave gone through the usual dress and shoe shopping for the affair in one day as I certainly had no intention... (more »»)
