Bump in the head makes one horny?

by Connie Veneracion on December 21, 2006

This is really strange. A man suffered from a fall while at work and “the injury unleashed a libido that could not be kept in check.” What’s even more strange is that he sued his employer and received a whopping £3 million ($6.2 million) in damages.

Stephen Tame, 29, had been married for eight months when he fell from a gantry at the cycle warehouse. He was in a coma for 53 days and spent nine months in hospital.

The accident was in January 2002 and after a long spell in a rehabilitation unit, he went home to Wickford, Essex, two and a half years later.

“His life and the life of his young wife were shattered,” Judge Michael Harris told the High Court. “He was expected to die but, miraculously, his life has slowly returned.”

But Mr Tame’s frontal lobe was damaged, causing inappropriate sexual behaviour which threatens his marriage.

“He says embarrassing things and he misbehaves in the presence of females. He watches pornographic sites and finds it difficult to stop doing things even when he knows he shouldn’t.”

Mr Tame has used a prostitute and has not slept with his wife for four years. He is disabled and has manic episodes. [The Telegraph]

Okay, I’m not a doctor, but injury to the frontal lobe unleashes uncontrollable libido? Wow, considering the rough games most boys play, I wonder how many of them fell or otherwise bumped their heads during childhood causing damage to their frontal lobes. Gee, can this be an explanation as to why more males commit adultery than females?

It’s a dangerous precedent, really. Not only in the context of labor law but also — and perhaps more especially — in the context of family law. Imagine a male boss or a male co-employee being sued for sexual harassment. Then he claims he suffered bumps in the head as a child and he has this uncontrollable libido.

Then, imagine using the “frontal lobe phenomenon” as a defense by a husband who gets sued for adultery and/or divorce. This is like saying that there are instances when a man can’t help being horny.

Now, here’s the thing. I read a few sites about brain injury and, in particular, the effects of injury to the frontal lobe. I found nothing that mentions uncontrollable libido among the symptoms. You can read this , this and this. A page from the University of Florida College of Medicine says that although a person suffering from frontal lobe damage may exhibit inappropriate sexual advances, overall there is reduced libido.

Like I said, I’m not a doctor. We had a subject called Medical Jurisprudence in the College of Law but there was no mention of frontal lobe injury and its effect on libido. It’s just that… well, it just sounds like a too convenient explanation for misbehaving males.

hard to correlate frontal lobe injury to sexual perversion, except:

Loss of flexibility in thinking
Persistence of a single thought
Inability to express language

For guys who are thinking of this bump as an excuse, beware of the first one in the list - paralysis.

Right, coma first before sexual perversion, if you can manage to wake up.

just an afterthought since this happens in UK
where prostitution is legal, Mr Tame’s preferred rehabilitation was the use of prostitute.

now, i get it…

one of those guys delusions
or what we knew as BRAIN DAMAGE
what an escape of accountability.

I think he suffered some sort of a traumatic brain injury to his frontal lobe. The frontal lobe houses the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for a human’s tact, inhibition, insight, judgement, personality and affect. In TBI, a person’s personality changes depending on what part of the brain is affected, sometimes temporary other times on a permanent basis.
I guess, these males have to prove extensive damage to the frontal lobe via CT scans and MRI’s and a neurosurgeon and neurologist to make the diagnosis for the “frontal lobe phenomenon”.

d0d0ng, re #1. “Right, coma first before sexual perversion, if you can manage to wake up.”

The incentive might be enough for them to wake up hahahaha

Re #2. Prostitution is legal in the UK? Wow, I thought that was just true in some towns in Germany.

Re #3. Trina, when I was reading up on frontal lobe injury, I came across a paper that says, sometimes, the injury goes undetected. Imagine, one’s behavior getting modified and not knowing the reason.

I read about the verdict just the other day. Reading the article the conclusion you will draw was that the judge based his decision mostly on the emotional damages rather than on any scientific evidence. The man is not even divorced but the judge took the possibility of divorce due to the emotional strain on the wife, as probable cause for such a compensation.

Under treatment na daw yung wife for depression cause she cope with the man’s constant demand for sex & for his now crass behaviour esp in front of female guests. She said she’s no longer in love with him & is “planning” to get divorced. So yung defence team siempre sinasabi di pa divorced so it shoudn’t be taken into account but… there you go.

The judge is a man. I don’t think damages would have been awarded so fast if the judge were female.

I am no British attorney, but this appears to be akin to a workers compensation type case. The complainant needs future medical treatment and support.

The sex issue does not appear to be related to damages EXCEPT for the fact that the complainant’s marriage is failing, so he will not have someone there to help take care of him… (see the damage elements at the bottom of this link: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2512188,00.html).

Mania/manic episodes do increase your sex drive.

rob, but the marriage has not officially been terminated. from no one to take care of him perspective, doesn’t the fact that the marriage still subsists make the award for damages premature? besides, there’s social security.

Miguel, they do? I didn’t know that. Wow.

Seems a little far reaching to me, but if he had a crazy libido you would think he would have sex with his wife in addition to the prostitute. Sounds like the bump this guy received stole all logical thought.
