Any alternative to Whiskas and Friskies?

I was in the supermarket earlier and bought another 2-kilo bag of Whiskas. I really ought to call up a friend who owns a pet supply store in Eastwood City and ask if they sell cat food by the sack. The 2-kilo bags of cat food every two weeks or so is turning out to be expensive. Kilo for kilo, a sack of Whiskas or Friskies will be a lot cheaper.
Yup, feeding the cats properly can be expensive. Of course, we don’t give them dry commercial cat food all the time. They do get their share of fish and chicken. Unfortunately, when it comes to table food, they can be very picky. They refuse to eat rice and bread unless mixed with mashed canned sardines. And they won’t touch veggies unless they haven’t eaten in a day.
It’s really sad that there aren’t any available choices aside from Whiskas and Friskies. Brands of dog food abound from Science Diet to Pedigree to Alpo and heaven knows what else. But when it comes to cat food, there’s just Whiskas and Friskies.

Try Iams cat food, which you can buy by the sack near Gilmore. It’s th only thing I feed my cats. They’re nice and fat, hardly get sick, and makes their coat shiny =)

Keeping a big sack of cat food, if you only have a 2-3 cats, is not wise also. We must always make sure that the food we give our pets is at its freshest!
Regarding the variety, it’s very much different here in SG, cat food brands are as numerous as that for dogs.
Do pet food marketers still think that the number of Filipino pet lovers is not “safe” enough for them to bring in other “exotic” brands of pet foods?

daphne, what’s the name of the store? BTW, Iams is among the brands included in the pet food recall.
Culture Shiok, dog lovers far outnumber cat lovers. In fact, the friend I mentioned in the entry pulled out all cat supplies and accessories from their shop because they were slow moving.

Sorry for the late response - seems like this post of yours is a few months old already…
but, in regards to cat food, i highly recommend the brands Nutros or Royal Canin for your cats. That is, if you can get both brands at the pet shops there in the Philippines. Nutros is a tad bit more expensive than Royal canin (2.5kg = €15 here) but, be assured that your cats will be getting the best food out on the market.
I talk to cat fanatics and breeders on IRC and through web forums frequently and have been advised to stay away from BOTH friskies and whiskas since they contain many additives which can make your cat fat and unhealthy. It’s pretty much like feeding your cats junk food - which we don’t want…we want them to live as long as possible! The same goes for IAMS and Hills Science Diet - although considered “better” brands than whiskas and friskies
I hope this suggestion helps.

hello. I have 65 cats. Based on my experience, it is always best to feed the cats boiled fish and a little rice instead of the commercial cat food. Especially the dry food, not healthy for the cats.

If you want to save money on the food for your cats, i guess you have to prepare them yourself like cooking fish or other chicken liver, parts for them. If you can’t, then the prepared commercial brands are the way to go, Just store the sacks of cat food in a cool, dry and secure place.
Mind you there are cat foods that can be mixed with milk or water.

Healthy Options has a good selection of cat foods, both dry and wet, that are natural, free of animal by-products, and using human-grade meat. They’re premium and more expensive than the supermarkets brands. I have four cats by the way.
