Hello.
Goodbye.
Kidding.
Gee, how hard it is trying to say something about oneself without trying to sound self-serving! I’m tempted to simply ask that you Google “Connie Veneracion” or “Sassy Lawyer” or “Pinoy Cook” and have this page done with. But that might give you the wrong idea about me. A third of what’s been written about me is true, a third is half-true and the rest consists of drug-induced hallucinations. I suppose I’d better let me, rather than them, tell you about me.
I’m the mommy of two teenagers, Samantha (Sam) and Alexandra (Alex) who are photocopies of me. No, we don’t have a “Clover” to complete the Totally Spies trio. However, we do have an Astro, a Twix, a Maki and a Pepper.
I am the wife of a guy who was nicknamed Speedy by his mother for reasons I may never comprehend.
I am a lawyer by profession (retired now) and the only daughter of a lawyer and a lawyer. I am also the sister of a lawyer who is an only son. Read the paragraph again. You’ll get it sooner than later.
I now write full time.
Okay, that’s four paragraphs that begin with “I” and that’s quite enough about me. Moving on to the blogs.
This blog is the first Filipino blog to be nominated in the prestigious Bloggies Awards.
That was in 2004 when this blog was called A sassy lawyer in Philippine suburbia, mostly political and social commentaries (there was a presidential election in 2004, the year that Fernando Poe Jr. ran for president) that led to the Sassy Lawyer op-ed column on print. I was invited; I didn’t do any shameless marketing of myself nor the blog.
There have been other nominations and some awards, including an Asian Weblog Award, I can’t remember all the details now, sorry.
Many of the earliest blog entries (to contextualize that nomination) are no longer online. Not by accident but by my decision.
House on a Hill currently consists of several sections, including: The Mommy Journals, the breakfast and health section, Sassy Lawyer (archive of op-ed columns and related commentaries), the dreamhome project, I love photography!, Short tales, large pics and Feast Asia.
I also have a food blog, Home cooking rocks!.

hi, sassy!
i also saw the csi episode you mentioned in your article for manila standard. i am just curious about a certain detail you indicated in the said article — that the priest got the woman pregnant.
i did have the impression that it was the killer who got the woman pregnant. and, the priest was discerning to leave the priesthood to be with the woman.
or probably, i just got the wrong impression?
tonton
hi tonton, you’re right. the priest THOUGHT he got her pregnant but post mortem proved the father of the unborn child was the killer.
Connie, I have been looking for these red fireball flowers everywhere!! Could you please email me some information as to where I might can buy some bulbs from? They have sentimental value. My grandmother used to have some in a pot.

i also have a VCO brand. let me know please. will really appreciate it. thanks and best regards!
was wondering if you can feature my brands on your site. please check out [deleted by blog owner] and [deleted by blog owner]. have other houseware brands, too.:-) decidedly contemporary, practical, kinda expensive but worth it, super great design technology but still very very functional.
thank you, leah. re your brands: sorry, i only write about what i bought in the usual course of things.
Hi Sassy Lawyer,
I was looking around and found your webbie.
I’m actually a student from the University of California Berkeley and I am writing a paper about the legal profession for my sociology of work class.
I was wondering if you’d honour me an email interview?
I find your perspective very interesting and as a woman interested in pursuing a future career in the legal profession, working on the topic of gender stratification has great relevance to me.
I was supposed to interview someone but he bailed out on me… hope you’ll help! I wanna give a REAL perspective… not one that i gather from the acadamic journals sitting on my desk now.
Hope you see this in time! drop me an email
im a student at hedcen and was amazed by one of your posts…i know im just a kid but hey….i have an opinion…it was a good read to me…just saying great job.
Which post was that, Ramon. And worry about being a kid — kids have a right to voice out their opinions.
Hi Sassy! I met a certain Henry del Mundo claiming to be an architect, and a favorite of Archbishop Arguelles; sad to say, Mr. del Mundo is nothing like what I perceive as someone close to such a holy man. I wish to inform Archbishop about this but I have no means of contacting him. If you can help…. Thanks!
Chitty, you lost me there. What’s my connection with either person?
Hi Connie -
I read your article about mercury poisoning elsewhere and wondered if I could ask you a couple of questions. I’ve been trying to find more information about this since, as a child, I ate tuna sandwiches nearly eveery day for about fifteen years when I was going through elementary, middle and high school. Thanks.
MAGANDA SANA KUNG ALISIN NA ANG PORK BARREL NA YAN TINGNAN NATIN KUNG SINO TALAGANG MATINONG SENADOR ANG KAKANDIDATO PA. ANO SA PALAGAY NYO ? HEHEHEHE….
Hello sassy
I have recently read an article of yours titled (Happy Valentine’s day jollibee) in the manila standard.
just to say you have a new fan!
kind regards
Daniel
Thank you, Daniel. You’re not a fan of Jollibee either, eh?
Hi Connie, I like the new look of house on the hill header. Did Alex made the sketch for the header? Its really nice.
It’s a composite image, Beng, from stock photos. Alex still owes me a new header — one for this blog and another for Pinoy Cook.
Hi Connie,
Good day to you and your family!
You have a very wonderful website… congrats.
I was lucky today to read your comment about the Ionized Alkaline Water, and as you have shown in the picture it is my biz you are referring about. I sad to hear about your story and it was never came into my attention. I am the owner of Maxx Ionized Alkaline Water-Antipolo Franchise which I put up as bizness for my wife and also as an investment. For like me, an OFW, it’s one of my investment and creating jobs in the Philippines. I coming back in the Philippines every 2 months working abroad and I should meet you in person to discuss about that incident so that I could be able to relay it in my franchisor. I started that franchise last Apr 2006 and my drivers told me every time I came back about some complaints. What I always assured my staff is to make the production and delivery clean and to satisfy the clients.
We are always open to receive complaints and will be happy to find a solution.
Hope you will publish this msg and looking forward to meet you.
Cheers,

Hi, I just read your column in the (online) Manila Standard re DaRoose’s predictions. I also visited sites on him, and it appears that most of his predictions are on earthquakes (and storms/typhoons, which he can deduce from the area’s seasons). Pretty safe for him as there is a wealth of archived data on earthquakes; all he has to do is mine these and, based on the frequency of earthquakes happening in the area, forecast that an earthquake of that magnitude will happen at about a certain time in that area. I checked if an earthquake of 8+ magnitude has ever hit the Philippines, and three have.
Mindanao, 14 April 1924 mag8.3
Panay Island, 24 January 1948 mag8.2
Mindanao, 16 August 1976 mag 8.0
I think he determined the interval in years between each and, ta da, he has a forecast that one will hit the Philippines this year. Pretty smart of him. He also did not name a place in the Philippines (the only exception, as all his earthquake predictions specified a location in the country).
As to having dated envelopes with the predictions inside, he can always write down the predictions and write the date on the envelope after an event supposedly confirming his prediction happens.
I expect, though, that a lot of people will be staying home on the 18th because of him.
I thought you and your readers might be interested in this site:

If you haven’t already seen it, I highly recommend it. It very nicely sums up capitalism and globalization at work today, and how it affects people and our environment. It will make you think twice before buying anything.
Dear Ms. Veneracion,
The Women’s International Perspective (www.thewip.net) linked to your article “Volunteer Genocide, My Foot” today in our Byline Portal where we hand-pick articles daily from women writers worldwide. We link our readers to important female bylines from journals, magazines, websites, blogs, and online newspapers around the globe. Thank you very much for writing this important piece.
You can find the link here:

The WIP seeks to balance the tremendous under-representation of women in media. We offer a greater diversity of background and opinion than typically found in one online news publication.
Since our launch in March 2007, we have also published over 230 exclusive stories from our writers who now represent a collective of over 50 women from over 20 countries. They have tackled important issues such as the continued economic meltdown of Zimbabwe, the AIDS epidemic as it rages worldwide, the plight of orphaned and vulnerable children in places like Africa and Eastern Europe, and the international effects of the pending US presidential election. Our articles offer a uniquely contextual perspective that exposes our readers to the thoughts and experiences of those directly affected by the events and issues being covered.
We hope you will visit our website (www.thewip.net) and consider writing an exclusive story for The WIP. We would also be pleased to link to your future stories, so please do stay in touch.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Warm Regards,

hi, ms. connie! Was wondering if you do grant interviews with regards to your profession as a full time writer now for Manila Standard? My niece is a Mass Com student of FEU, and they are asked/required to interview print/ad media personalities who are not graduates of Journalism/Mass Com courses.
She’s been bombarding me to ask personal acquiantances but most I know who works in the media are all graduates of communications courses. We would really appreciate if you’d grant us a favor.Thank you.
Btw, I love the new house on a hill and you did a great job designing its interior on your own.
hi sassy lawyer,
think i got addicted to your blogs this early. i was just looking for a bistek recipe last night and it lead me to your blog. very interesting and inspiring! never read manila standard since the office where i used to work before buys another newspaper. i’m in japan now so i think i’ll just read your articles from your blog.
your blog in a way showed me that there are other interesting things in life other than what i used to do. and one of them is photography! i was tempted to get a dSLR camera at once but i noticed you have used a point-and-shoot camera on some of your photos and got impressive results as well! thought that it’ll be much wiser to study photography using my sony dsc-w80 as a beginner (it’s been with me for more than a year now but haven’t had the chance to explore its features).
keep writing!

Hi Ms. Connie,
I’m a student journalist and I had a bad experience last time when I did an editorial assignment. I was taking photographs of a corporate building with my co-journalists when we were seized by their security guard. He told us what we’re doing is illegal and invited us inside their building. There they asked us to delete the photos. We explained that we were just students working for a campus publication and we took photos of their building from outside. But they won’t let us out until we have deleted the pictures.
I was just wondering if that was right. We took the photos outside their premises–in a public space. I hope you can advise me on this matter so I would know what to do in case it happens again. Thank you.
Awesome piece on poverty for Blog Action Day!
Adrian, I suggest you read up on “editorial photos.” That’s your passport.
Thanks, Allison.
Hi there. It’s so interesting to read your articles and blogs. I would just like to ask when the next Corelle/Pyrex/Etc. Sale will be. I wish to invest in these worthy items as we are stocking up on our own cook and kitchenwares. Thanks!
I’ll post an entry when I have a date.
Hello Ms. Connie…I tried accessing your Pinoy Cook website this morning and I got a warning from Firefox that your site was a suspected attack site. Previously, I accessed your site last night and I suddenly got redirected to an adobe reader screen that got frozen so I had to shut down my pc by force. I’m just hoping I didn’t get infected by any malware or trojan horses. I hope Pinoy Cook returns online soon.
Cathee, the site was hacked. It’s been cleaned inside and out but I have to wait for Google to re-index the pages and remove the red alert. It might take a day. Less, hopefully.
cool intro, I noticed the “breakfast and health” link doesn’t work.
That makes you one of the very few Filipino bloggers with such a policy.
Merry Christmas to you Connie and your family!
Fixed them, Mark.
Paul, re “That makes you one of the very few Filipino bloggers with such a policy.”
LOL I bet.
Holiday wishes to you and yours too.
Ma, iedit mo yung — I’m the mommy of two teenagers, Samantha (Sam) and Alexandra (Alex) who are photocopies of me. No, we don’t have a “Clover” to complete the Totally Spies trio. However, we do have an Astro, a Twix, a Maki and a Pepper.
HINDI MO NILAGAY SI KUTING!
Dun mo na lang ilagay sa blog mo si Kuting.
Hi! What is Sam’s blog URL? I have been wanting to ask that pero nakakalimutan ko pag nandito ako. Yan siguro talaga effect ng blog mo – memory lapse. LoL!
Pati blog na rin ni Alex kung pwede. Pati kay Speedy lahat na. Lol!
Sam has a Multiply site (http://shammmven.multiply.com/) but it’s mostly kalokohan photos with school friends. Her more serious stuff are scattered in this blog. Alex hasn’t blogged in ages (tinamad). Speedy’s is http://dadishome.com.
Greetings and may this message find you in good spirits and health.
I couldn’t find a place to comment on your Cat Killers, and so I found my way here. Some clarification is needed about Tengteng and the petition. First of all, there was no reference to a leash as far as I am concerned. It has always been a collar. Secondly, it shouldn’t be assumed that I assumed that the collar was given to Tengteng by cat-loving UP students. The collar was, in fact, given to her by one of the students and I have this information from the very student who started the outcry at the Animal Welfare Advocates Group run by PAWS. So, I wouldn’t conclude that when an animal wears a collar, or even a leash, that it must belong to someone.
Tengteng, by many accounts, was indeed homeless although she enjoyed quite a bit of affection from many people including the security guard who took her in a few times, note the photo of Tengteng on the desk. It must also be noted that no one has ever come forward to claim her or to complain about their pet Tengteng being killed.
I can join you in condemning the poor state of animal welfare in the Philippines particularly irresponsible pet ownership. One would think that with the great number of strays running around a government branch like the health department would initiate a citywide, if not nationwide, spay and neutering program. Instead, S&N has fallen unto the shoulders of NGOs like CARA and PAWS, and that is like chipmunks fighting a forest fire. The problem of strays is rooted in the lack of a strong S&N program. Strays gathering around garbage dumps is really just the symptom of the problem. A great place for info is SpayUSA.
The petition has now passed the 3,000 mark and I am pleased to see that many Filipinos find Tengteng’s killing offensive to their sense of decency. Of course, many non-Filipinos have also signed the petition. I will keep the petition open as long as it is pertinent. Frankly, I fear that UP officials might fail to realize the negative impact of a non-action on the reputation of the university as well as on their own. I hope that more writers would take up the torch on the matter of Filipino animal welfare. Engendering a more humane Filipino society will bear good fruits in many areas of society.
More power to you,
Ted Teodoro
http://www.onlovinganimals.blogspot.com
You quoted Mr. Candare’s blog entry in the petition and you’re saying there was never any mention to a leash? Please review this portion: “It didn’t occur to me back then that the cat had a leash. So I think somebody owns it.”
As I said, as far as I am concerned, there was never a reference to a leash. You must have been referencing Candare, not me, when you wrote about a leash. Anyway, like you, I do pay particular attention to accuracy. For example, there are other information that I am aware of, but since they are still unverified I have chosen not to include in the petition. This info pertain to violent incidents in his past.
Furthermore, I think you are in a wonderful position to spread the gospel of animal welfare. You could write about the deplorable state of S&N in the country. No S&N = More Strays.
On a different matter, how about pushing some vegetarian food on your blog? I have been a vegetarian for several years now and that includes no dairy products like cheese, milk, or eggs. Animals do not have to die for us to have a meal, you know.
Thanks, and more power to you,
Ted
My exact statement was “But the thing that supporters of the petition seem to miss is the reference to a leash.” It wouldn’t make sense to interpret that as the petitioners missing their own reference to a leash. Of course it was in reference to Mr. Candare’s statement.
If you’re going to push the animals don’t have to die for us argument, I can argue that plants don’t have to die for us either. I am a believer in the food chain, Ted, and humans just happen to be at the top of the chain. The problem with the animals don’t have to die for us argument is that it disrupts the food chain the continuity of which is more important to nature than any pretense at political correctness.
I like your site. Got you BOOKMARKED! I love it for reasons of style, clarity and straightforwardness. The fact that you’re from a family of lawyers could be another reason. I also come from one.
Good day ahead.
Can I get sued if for slapping someone? I really want to slap this woman who was the reason for the cancellation of our wedding plans.
I LOVE YOUR BLOG!
Even the comments are interesting and funny.
P.S. I actually clicked and read “Click here and read before posting a comment.” HAHAHA.

p.s. i don’t know how to send u the video.
Hello Ms. Connie! I stumbled upon your site while I was looking for recipes in the internet. Home Cooking Rocks and Market Manila are my favorite blogs… both very well written by folks who know their stuff.
I’ve already tried some of your recipes and because you’re Pinay I know malinamnam unlike some of the recipes I got from abroad.. medyo bland… (that’s my project for the rest of the year — trying out recipes from cookbooks and blogs such as yours).
More power and God bless.
Hello!Miss Connie. Thanks for the “leche flan” recipe I was looking for,I hit upon your website. There’s no dull moment everytime I read your blogs. Keep inspiring people. God bless you more.
Hi Connie, I don’t know if you are aware of this but there’s something wrong with the appearance of your blog. At least on my PC it looks a bit strange on both firefox and chrome. If you want me to give you a screen shot please email me and I’ll send you the picture.

Hey Connie–
Thought I’d let you know, the website I’m working on called AsiaPacificFilms.com just launched and I think there’d be a ton of films you and your readers might like. We stream culturally important movies from the Asia and Pacific, and all of them have been curated by really good people (like award-winning filmmakers, international professors, film festival directors). Since we just started up, we’re giving everybody a free trial period until Nov. 1st. Just sign up, click on a film and it’ll show up on your screen.
From reading your blogs, I think you’d like the images in Poet of the Wastes (from Iran) or August Sun (from Sri Lanka). Both are shot beautifully, and both are subtly and softly touching. Check us out before the 1st!
Thank you!
Thank you, your recipes are wonderful, easy to follow… I’ve learned how to cook because of you… My children love it… Keep it up..
Good day!
I am Karen Apostol from UP Diliman taking up BA Broadcast Communication. I am on my senior year and I am conducting a research on how bloggers make use of blog advertisements to gratify their needs in blogging.
As a relatively new phenomenon, blogging is a trend which is of popular use by many of the Internet users. There are many possible advantages and/or usage of blogging, but this study focuses more on the personal experience of the bloggers in relation to the blog advertisements that can be found in their blog sites.
In line with this, I would like to ask for your participation in my research as one of my key informants. I believe that as a blogger yourself, you will have the experience and information which will be of help for the conduct of this study. Rest assured that all information gathered will be strictly treated confidentially between the researcher and the key informants, and that it will be used only for the purposes of this research.
We hope for your favorable response soon. Thank you very much and more power.
hi! i don’t know if someone noticed it already. but don’t you think your tag line should be Apple. Canon. Nicotine & Caffeine, instead of Coffee? for parallelism of words or something. nicotine & caffeine are both substance. thus, cigarette & coffee OR nicotine or caffeine. thanks!
Caffeine is present in other drinks – including softdrinks. I drink coffee.
.. so is nicotine. unless you get your nicotine dose from other than the usual sources, i.e. cigarette or cigar.
Then you just made your previous comment totally irrelevant.

Huh?
Hi Ms. Connie,
Would like to personally thank you for the recipes i got from your site. Seems I have a coach beside me while doing them because your tips (on the side) made it easy. You also made the ingredients simple when you put the pinoy a.k.a.’s, or substitute.
I haven’t gone thru your other blogs yet, i just thought of knowing you today because you seemed so nice on all the comments in your recipe, so i went to your intro page. Learning stuffs here about you made me interested also on the other blogs.
Have a nice day! And again THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Hi Ms. Connie,

I am just wondering if it is okay with you to allow me to publish somoe of your blog entry which suits m y purpose.
Hoping for your kind approval to this request.
Best regards,
Ariel
Not okay. Create your own content.
Hi Connie,
I love reading your blog. I too am the daughter of a lawyer and law graduate, the only daughter, but also the only lawyer among my sibs. We come from same law school
I would LOVE to “retire” as well and to spend more time in my kitchen cooking and baking for my toddler and hubby. That may not be possible right now so, in the meantime, I experiment on the weekends and get ideas from your blog. I’ve tried many of your recipes and enjoyed them immensely. I love that you share techniques, rather than just recipes. Please keep them coming!
Glad to meet you, attorney! Cooking and baking are such stress busters.
Dear Ms. Connie,

Is that a magazine or a website?
website. Here´s the link http://www.adam.fi/.
Ms. Connie,
I really enjoy your website and want to take a moment of your time to discuss a topic I believe all moms/parents are interested in. Give the current state of the economy where jobs are scarce and competition is high, we find that having a proper education to fall back on has become vital. The building blocks for superior education are developed as a child. As such, I wanted to take a minute to discuss with you the importance of an early childhood education and what it will mean for our youth as they prepare for the future.
I’ve written an informational and educational article that I’d like to pass along to you in hopes that you’ll post it on House on the Hill, particularly in your Mommy Journals section. I believe your readers will enjoy what it has to offer. Please let me know if you’d be interested in reviewing it and I’ll send it along.
Thank you in advance for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you.
Kindly,
Emily
