A tale about a pair of Margarita glasses
I don’t often write about our drinking habits. For two reasons. One, I don’t want to sound like we’re bragging about the fact that we drink (I don’t think it’s anything to brag about). Two, because I don’t know what’s so exciting about writing about drinking unless I am Edgar Allan Poe. Thing is, when Speedy and I first met, it was over a drinking spree. We were both beer drinkers and we had a common friend who was only too happy to host late-night beer drinking sprees and that was that.
I lost my appetite for beer a long time ago. It’s not that I suddenly found it distasteful. It was more of hating having to run to the bathroom after each bottle of beer. And the last time that Speedy took out his sales team drinking, when he got home, he swore he was getting too old for beer. We don’t drink beer at home. We indulge in the occasional bottle of wine but it’s not a regular thing. There was a time when we went loco over cocktail drinks though. We had bottles of grenadine, tequila, vodka and triple sec and we went through the Tequila Sunrise stage. I tell you, I am absolutely nuts over Tequila Sunrise and there was a period of several months when Speedy would mix drinks every so often. But not being serious wine drinkers nor real connoisseurs, we never really found the need to acquire proper wine and cocktail glasses. Truth be told, we don’t find it strange to drink our wine or our mixed cocktail drinks from water glasses. I mean, they won’t taste any different anyway.
But my sister-in-law, Ava, made some drop-dead Margaritas on Christmas Day, served them in real Margarita glasses and, suddenly, we started wondering why we have a pair of fluted glasses at home and nothing else. When we went to the Mall of Asia earlier today, I told Speedy we ought to look for some decent wine and cocktail glasses. We did.

We found some very nice Margarita glasses at Living Well. If the Margarita looks greenish in the photo, that’s because the glass is blue. At P125.00 per piece, I was really happy. Sam was pointing out some very nice wine glasses — Mikasa crystal wine glasses — but, at P1,950.00 per piece… well, shouldn’t we be more concerned about the quality of the wine rather than the quality of the wine glasses?
I’m on my second glass of Margarita and I feel giggly…

alam mo isa lang ang wish ko after reading this post. sana magkapitbahay tayo. he he. super relate ako. said goodbye to beer a looong time ago. ha ha ha. malungkot naman uminom ng wine or cocktail mag-isa kaya…social drinker na lang daw ako, when I’m out with friends, pero one or twice a year na lang mula magka-anak ako, lalo na nung umuwi dito. may stock ka pa ba ng ingredients for cocktails? mag-e-enjoy ako dyan sa house niyo! he he. alam mo dami ko friends na-meet asawa sa “inuman” lasting at masaya marriage life nila.
Agree. It’s what’s inside that counts.
Been planning to buy wine glasses too. We don’t really buy wine, but we usually accumulate several bottles after Christmas season, and it takes many months before we can finally consume them. We open a bottle only when there are special friends over the house. E, nakakahiya – sa baso lang namin sila pinapainom ng Chardonnay. Parang gatas, hahaha!
Anyway, I’m looking forward to New Year because my daughter promised to serve us the wine – sort of reenact what she did in her Food and Beverage class when they were made to serve at their Resto 101. So I think I got to run off now to check out wine glasses – yung mura lang, para kahit mabasag, okay lang
Wishing you and your family the best of New Year, Connie!
Gloria, re “dami ko friends na-meet asawa sa “inuman” lasting at masaya marriage life nila”
I have a theory. I think it’s because such men feel more at ease about women as social equals. Men who think that certain activities are taboo to women simply because they are women don’t make good husbands, in my opinion.
And, yes, dami pa ingredients. Hanggang New Year na ito hehehehe Ang layo mo naman kasi… hehehe
Em, exactly, kahit nga tunggaan na lang sa bote, ayos na. LOL Speedy and I used to do that a long time ago. We’d bring a bottle of wine to the breakwater and finish it straight from the bottle. hahaha
Rhodora, the best of the New Year too! I can imagine your daughter’s spread. 5-star meal hehehe At oo nga, only reasonably priced glasses. Drinkers aren’t exactly people with steady hands hahahaha
Kami naman ng asawa ko, our first date was a drinking date in some seedy bar in Malate. My idea of course. He was a gin tonic guy and I was alaga ni San Miguel. Syempre dyahe sya kaya drink na din siya. From then on he was a convert. Hay, those were fun times. Now, minsan minsan na lang.
I haven’t developed a taste for wine yet. Naasiman pa ako. However, I love champagne
Kongkong, there are sweet wines. Pag red wine tapos semi-sweet, naku, pamatay. hehehe I’m just not familiar with the terms — merlot, cabernet. I don’t care about the name, just the taste hehehe
kami din i hubby beer drinker. working in a call center, madalas ang hirap matulog sa araw so pampatulog namin beer. this year, my new year’s resolution is to stop drinking beer. laki na kasi ng tiyan ko eh. just like Kongkong, I haven’t developed a taste for wine yet, pag uminom ako ng wine sinisukmura ako. pero dapat siguro, try ko na. apat na yung bote ng red wine namin, last year kasi & this year may red wine na company giveaway.
Happy New Year to you and your family.
Naman, tong article mo reminds me of the phone call of my hipag; yun daw pinadala kong antique wine goblets thru balikbayan box eh nabasag daw yung dalawa. I bought in a North Carolina surplus shop (in a suburb); hindi lang antique, they had a handmade etching of different kids of locomotive. Its really authentic and beautiful. I was dreaming of having my fav drink of Asti Spumante when I am there in the Phils. Iyak ko talaga, but its my fault, I did not wrapped it good.
brenda, remember: reveratrol daw in red wine is good for the heart hehehe What an excuse to drink red wine, ano? LOL
Ebba, ano yun, parang collectors’ items? Sayang.
Hmmmm. I guess it’s true that if you meet your partner sa inuman eh magtatagal. Kulas and I have a bottle of Tequila to thank for. On a dare, we got to share a bottle of tequila between the two of us against another pair. We were giddy but the other pair was dead drunk and had to be carried to the car. That other pair is still going strong and never tried that dare again with us. We may not be drinking as much as we used to but we’re still together.
Why was Sam heckling?
That margarita looks divine. I wouldn’t mind having one myself!
Have you tried Tequila Rose? Lovely drink.
Connie, ewan ko if its a collector’s item or originally sketched by th owner. I suspect that its from an estate sale, hten somebody donated to the shop. We lived in the “boondocks” side of NC and lots of colonial southwestern estate sale going on. Sayang talaga, the goblets were so “cryally” that when it shattered, they were so fine into pieces.
weird in a sense, kulasa, ‘di ba, but if a man does not feel insecure or uncomfortable about a partner who can do things he can do as a man, he must be a deep one.
Toni, Sam heckles under all circumstances.
Surfing for a recipe of Tequila Rose — thanks!
Ebba, kaya pag brand new ‘di ba, chinaware pieces are separated by thick cardboards? An aunt sent us stuff from Canada once and the plates were individually wrapped in old newspapers, but some still broke.
Hi Miss Connie. Tequila Rose is a brand I think. Its a Black bottle with a pink label. Parang Strawberry milk with alcohol ang lasa. =)
can you share your margarita recipe with us?
