A new twist to the fake diploma culture

You’d think you’ve heard it all after learning about how fake college diplomas can be bought along C.M. Recto Avenue in Manila. You’d think nothing could be more shocking than people who hired themselves out as ghost thesis writers.

Well, the fake education culture has gone a step farther. Thesis-writers-for-hire are actively advertising themselves on the internet. With name, contact number and email address. No attempt at anynomity whatsoever.

Fake thesis writers

How brazen. The guy seems to feel that what he’s doing is not much different from selling a cell phone. What kind of culture have we spawned?

True story: I know of an ex-professor who “sold” thesis papers and programming projects to his students. Projects that he himself assigned. Ibang klase nga naman ano?

  2. Shit, what an asshole.

come to think of it we filipinos thought this fake diplomas, pliagiarized thesis etc. happens only here in the Philippines nah, read this excerpt From a Korean herald editorials.April 16,2008: I met an American professor who laments the rampant plagiarism among Korean students who recently forced to drop out because of plagiarism,He said clicking his tongue.”He was a bright student but because of one mistake,he ruined his career in the States” Due to plagiarism some Korean students have to transfer to different coleges andothers return to Korea disgracefuly. Not only students are guilty many times even the faculty members are disgraced by the scandal of pliagiarism. We still remeber those professors who could have been cabinet ministers in the Lee administration had it not been for pliagiarism scandals ruined their reputations.Indeed it is a shame that so many people are still accused of academic dishonesty, and face ruinous consequences………

Unfortunately this is very very common among the Comp. Sci. crowd.

That’s why theses are rarely considered or given credit in the IT hiring process.

  5. Ed, based on my internet experience, this business of selling research papers has been a flourishing business in America for years. And I think that this kind of cheating in school is just an offshoot of a dishonest culture, no matter which culture.

Jon, why is that? because techy people are not expected to be good in writing? And I don’t get it. If this is a known practice, what’s the point in making graduating students submit a thesis at all?

This puts a cloud over diplomas and schools in general. Professors must be wary of these sites lest they be taken for a fool by their students. Hindi pwede yan.

Ms. Sassy, allow me to explain. Unlike other fields, Comp. Sci. thesis is creating a system. A system is compose of several tasks (ex. inventory, report printing, file management etc.). Each task has several programs, uir files and other tidbits all inter-related and compiled.

It is easy to plagiarize a program by changing the uir (user interface resource) file, variables names or twitch the logic a little bit.

I have a niche blog (http://devcompage.com) which is a development communication resource for students, teachers and practitioners, since I am a professor. On top of uploaded PDF files of relevant publications and websites, it offers a free thesis/research advice in mass communication or devcom. Just advice. Yesterday, one reader wrote asking for suggestions for his thesis topic. I replied that he has to sort it out because it will depend on the research priorities of his university, his interests, his major, and he has to talk to his thesis adviser, read widely to review the literature and find out the gaps.

So while I spend my free time maintaining my blog to help humanity, it is sad to see that the services in CM Recto are now peddled online which makes it easier for students to plagiarize.

  9. BlogusVox, makes me think that an actual presentation and defense of a system is more apt in lieu of a written thesis.

Moni, I have a food blog. You know how many students e-mail me to give them the “perfect formula” for, say, siopao dough so they can complete their thesis? If I answered them, I wouldn’t be writing their thesis, but finding the perfect formula is part of their research work so I don’t answer them at all.

Ms. Sassy, I’m going to write about fake diplomas and certificate here in the kingdom. I’m going to link this article ha.

  11. Sure, BlogusVox. And I’ll go and read. Last time I saw your blog, there were only two entries.

I don’t know if blogger is under maintenance or something. Every time I go there, I have to “refresh” to update my blog (there are now 5 entries). Thanks.

Yesterday, I accidentally came across this post, Connie… and guess what, there is an even bigger asshole than the one you mentioned here… he has an “acceptance fee” of P500.00, then P3,000 fo every chapter and then P15,000-P18,000 for the whole thesis, depending on the topic! And at the end of the ad, he said: “Just please respect my services” (or something to that effect… Respect??? what respect is he craving for? Ano siya hilo?
