Asia facing food crisis?

by Connie Veneracion on March 31, 2008

Threat of turmoil all over Asia has been the favorite doomsday prediction for weeks.
In Thailand, farmers are hoarding rice.
In Indonesia, social unrest is feared although the government spends “35 percent of its entire budget on fuel and electricity subsidies to keep those commodities affordable for the poor.” Wow. Can we say as much for the [...]

Guarding against summer brownouts

by Connie Veneracion on March 31, 2008

My new iPhoneDriving home, all I could think about was how the iPhone would work with my SMART sim card, if it would reject it, if there really was a defect and if I would have to return it. When I couldn’t connect to the web and couldn’t get the e-mail to work — I got the message that I was not subscribed to EDGE — I was so sure we bought a lemon and was about to cry. I searched the web for answers, found nothing and got progressively depressed.

About security of tenure

by Connie Veneracion on March 29, 2008

Labor laws notwithstanding, if we look at most corporate set-ups especially in the Philippine setting, capability and skill are not the only factors on which security of tenure are anchored. Things like PR (sucking up), knowing and hanging out with the “right crowd” and learning the art of not stepping on the toes of the wrong people affect an employee’s chances of staying on and moving upward.

Taking back what is ours

by Connie Veneracion on March 27, 2008

If you think Boracay is paradise, you’d only be half right. True, the quality of the fine white sand is not exaggerated, and the water is still cleaner and clearer than a lot of other beaches in the country. But Boracay isn’t for me. My idea of a beach as a getaway venue is one [...]

Food shortage

by Connie Veneracion on March 27, 2008

In the Philippines, if people don’t stop making babies like rabbits, future generations will starve. That’s according to a spokesperson of the National Food Authority (NFA). Actually, I don’t understand why this should be newsworthy at all. Every person with a brain knows that the more mouths to feed, the lesser the share of each.
The [...]

The problem with too much

by Connie Veneracion on March 27, 2008

Over stimulating an infant’s brain with non-stop audios can cause permanent damage. Old-fashioned nuzzling, kissing and tickling is still a more effective way of communication.
Meanwhile, too much reliance on gadgets can affect the memory; specifically, the ability to remember dates and numbers. But then again, who wants to memorize dates and numbers?
